I went to the docs yesterday with a family member who has diabetes t2 but was there for something else not related.

As it is a large practice, there are med students there who see patients prior to the GP, examine them and come up with a diagnosis then GP comes in and listens to students opinion and diagnosis. This happened yesterday, he was seen by a student who was extremely thorough and asked loads of questions about ALL health issues..he asked if the family member monitored his own blood to check his glucose levels? Ahem*. This question was followed by a lot of this   ... :lolno: coming from my direction. I informed him that the practice do not prescribe strips and made it clear how ridiculous this was and how they should be made available to those who wanted to be proactive in their own diabetes care.

He asked what good this could be for a t2 when testing wasn't really necessary, what would one do with the information gleaned from such testing..I let him have it. :D Bearing in mind this wasn't my consultation ( ) I very rapidly told him what I thought of the dietary advice being given out and how it is causing complications, how bg testing is not anxiety provoking and how it can be reduced when one has the knowledge to plan what we can safely eat yadda yadda. Current advice out of date, current guidelines for safe levels are higher than most of us would go.. I tell ye, I could do this speil in my sleep now, I reel it off at every opportunity to anyone that will listen. Or not. I don't care, I'll tell them anyway!

He asked questions, listened carefully and then told me he was a type 1!! He is due to qualify for General Practice in a months time and said that he felt that after what I had said, he felt that those who asked for them should get strips, proactivity is what docs want to see in diabetes management. He also felt the dietary points were worth investigating.

If my little spiel makes only one person go away and think, look a little deeper then I'll be happy. If it's a doctor of the future, hell, I'm delighted!!

Very good  I think when someone has the condition themselves they are more inclined to listen knowing what it is like to live with diabetes.

excellent, well done.

I seem to keep reading about little acorns lately - is the oak coming?

Well done! The iceberg is slowly being chipped away :)

Well done. It's a case of one practice, gp and nurse at a time but you can bet they talk to each other...
