Frustrated Type 1

Hi there,

This is my story and I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. I was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes in mid 2003 and subsequently went through the diet control period, then onto metformin gradually. I went right up to the maximum dosage of 3 grams a day on metformin and was accused by the Dr of not taking my medicine. (3 years later)

I changed the doctor at this point as I felt that my relationship with him was slow but surely going into the "you're a number" kind of thing. On changing my GP, I was sent straight to the diabetic clinic at the local hospital. They done a quick blood check and determined that I was type 1. Things started to look up and I was able to control my symptoms using novomix (26 unit in morning, 27 at night). I started to get all the bugs under the sun and have been unable to control my sugar levels since then. To make things more complicated, I have had to move doctor again as I am no longer in the catchment area for the new GP. So, I have seen the new GP once and all he has done was fill the prescription and tell me to monitor the sugar levels more closely due to ongoing viral infections.

As you can imagine, I am getting rather frustrated as it is near impossible to judge my insulin intake to reflect on fluctuating sugar levels.

Any advice would be appreciated on this.

<br />Hiya sounds as if you are on a mix, something like 70/30!
If this is the case ring the hospital and talk to the diabetes nurse and ask to change over to MDI. This involves having your short and long acting seperate. Don't do as many do and just take a fixed dose learn how to carb count and adjust your insulin to your needs.
Hope you feel better soon.

Sarah I couldn't agree more.

Madpiper, you need to get onto basal/bolus. If you are truly T1 you are on the positively WORST insulin regime you could possibly be on. Learn carb counting, get on basal bolus regime. If you really really are able to do it, enrol in http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/
which will teach you carb counting. It's your life, look after it!

Thank you both for responding.

I have been onto the diabetes unit at the local hospital to arrange an appointment to discuss what is a better course of action to using novomix 30.

I appreciate all that is said in the way of advice, and will take heed.
