GAD Antibodies - Any other blood tests?

I discovered my diabetes about 4 weeks ago, I was initially very badly let down by my GP and local A & E.

I gave my GP a written list of my (typical diabetic) symptoms but he missed the diabetes and told me to go home and rest! I guess I knew what was wrong and therefore used my brother's monitor (he's been type 1 for 20 years!) my BG read "high" on the monitor - off the scale! I was feeling really ill and went to my local A & E. My BG in A & E was 51, I am 41 years old and therefore A & E was certain I had type 2 and the blood test must be wrong as I wasnt "ill enough"! I was sent home with tablets, although some doctors at A & E felt I should be admitted nobody would overule a Registrar who had gone home!

The next day I felt even worse so, in despair, took myself along to the local diabetic unit at the hospital to ask/beg for help. I was seen by a diabetic nurse who immediately started me on insulin, I had ketones +++. She began a critical incident report into my previous lack of treatment!

The diabetic unit have been excellent, they have been treating me "as a type 1" with insulin whilst awaiting the results of blood tests. My diabetic nurse was sure I was type 1 as my symptoms were sudden onset, I am not overweight, I have a family history of type 1 and I also have an autoimmune disease - underactive thyroid.

The blood tests were back today showing positive GAD antibodies, I was told this meant I am type 1 - is this correct and should I be asking for any other tests?

I'm slowly getting to grips with my diabetes, this forum has been a great hlep!

Thanks

Re: GAD Antibodies

You seem to have been a victim of carelessness and diagnosis by birthdate. The oldest record of a new T1 that I've found was 93 years, but they still assume that anyone older than a teenager is a T2.
the "if in doubt treat as T1 " route is safest for the patient.
I'm so glad your local diabetes centre has done all the right things.
Hope you feel well soon

hya and welcome to the forum,
thats all u need to know that u are definately type 1, hope u soon feel better, please have a good look around the forum and ask as many questions as u need and remember ..no question is silly, im also a later type 1 who was thought to be a type 2 grrr :D

The GAD antibodies support the diagnosis of type one. I suspect you know this already though. Well done to the diabetes nurse!
