GAD Antibodies

Hello all,

Does anyone know about this. I understand the fact that it means that the body is attacking itself and that it means that I have type 1 diabetes. What I'm really confused about is the readings. The reference range is 1-5 and mine was 377. What does this mean? Does that do anything I should worry about and why would mine be that high? What was yours if you ever had one?

Sorry for 20 questions but normally a quick google search will give you a half assed answer at least to any question but realloy struggled with this.

Thanks!

Paul

From what I understand a high GAD antibody count in conjunction with a low C-peptide count would indicate Type 1 diabetes(I'm awaiting tests for these myself) whereas a high c-peptide in conjunction with a low GAD antibody count would suggest Type 2 diabetes.
What does your GP/consultant say about the result?

Hi Paul,
I was diagnosed as Type 1 in 2010, but have recently found that it is actually LADA, not Type 1. I saw my diabetes consultant on Monday and she told me that my GAD level is 50,000! I am not sure what it means either - I asked her if there was any consequence of it being so high and she said no. I am trying to do my own research into it at the moment.
Sorry I can't be of more help, just wanted to say you are not alone!

Vicky,

Thanks for saying hello. Its wierd isn't it there seems to be next to no information on what a high level means or why it could be so high. Yours does put mine in perspective though! Is it on the same scale? Whats the difference Type 1 to LADA? Is it just about when you get it as I'm 29 so not normal age for Type 1 I would think? Are you still Insulin user as if so I guess I'm not bothered which it is as its same treatment?

Paul

Hi. I'm LADA, diagnosed at 34 because my Anti-GAD. LADA or T1.5 as it's known is a slower onset of T1.
