Gad antibodies

Morning people!
I had a gad antibodies test on weds.
If its positive will they automatically put me on injections? The nurse taking the test had never heard if it and its a month wait for results !

. (Type 2 for 15 years, 10 years on metformin sr 1500mg bs 6-8)

A positive GAD test would mean you have the auto-immune type of diabetes. T1 or LADA. As for insulin, that depends. A lot of people diagnosed are still producing some insulin and are often said to be in a "honeymoon phase/period". Not sure if this would apply to you but once you get results, you'll find out more.
 
Thanks mo. I been on metformin for 10 years and always been "unlucky" to be type 2 as I'm not " typical"
My bloods recently started increasing so they now decided to look into it ...

It's great news that they are looking into this as trying to treat undiagnosed Type 1 is a nightmare,I was misdiagnosed as type 2 and my bloods went through the roof and oral medications did nothing at all,it was the GAD test and C-peptide test that re-classed me as a late onset type 1 and I'm on injections and these days with modern insulin pens and fine,short needles it's pretty painless and nowhere near as scary as I thought it would be :wink:

Thanks paul. My biggest fear is having the needles. I'm not bothered about injecting.. It's the hypo, snack , carb count thing. Anyway... I'm jumping ahead a bit as I don't yet know.
Paul how long were u misdiagnosed for ( if u don't mind me asking)

No problem :wink: I was misdiagnosed for around 4-5 months and started out with a HbA1c of 7.5% and tried diet only,diet and metformin,diet metformin and gliclazide and it got to a point where I was waking up with fasted readings of 23 and after eating my meter often showed 'HI' which meant anything over 34mmol,I was getting weaker and sicker and I had more infections everywhere than I knew what to do with,my GP gave up after seeing my HbA1c had rocketed to 14.1% after only 3 months and referred me to the hospital where the tests confirmed it all.
 
Blimey... That was all sudden then. Glad you're all sorted now.
I'd be surprised if I am lada. As my pancreas has been fairly stable for so many years. But. The specialist must have had enough doubt to investigate. So it's fine by me, really keen to find out what "type" I am now!

It's always good to know the real origin if you can get the tests(which you're having) as you'll know for future reference and it means you can research up all about it.

Good luck and I hope you get the answers that you want,if it does comes back as LADA then we'll advise and help where we can :wink:

Thought id update my news...
Saw the specialist nurse today who showed me the basic results of gad test. Less than 5 which is negative. She explained that this is a basic diagnoses of type 2 and that I'm mostly likely mody. But, I'm seeing a (consultant?) who will have much more detailed results in October. I'm very happy as my Med's and diet control are keeping it stable atm ( mostly down to diet advice from this site tbh!) and I haven't got to change anything )

Congratulations on the negative result I wish I was GAD negative :-(

MODY is genetic and u and ur parents have to have certain genes for u to have that, it may just be that u have lost some beta cells over the course of being type 2? Did they give u a c-peptide test/result? This would show how much insulin u were producing and should be a high amount if u are a 'typical' type 2 but may be lower if u have lost any beta cells to exhaustion....


Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

As for other elements of the test I imagine ill know more in October ... Nurse seems to think the consultant will give me more details. My mum was type 2, so there is a history, although she wasn't the same build as me. She was a 'typical type 2 shape' and diagnosed in her 50s.
I'm just keeping up the Med's and food control to keep my poor pancreas happy .
