gastro-enteritis and metformin

I have steroid induced type 2. Typically my morning readings are in the 7's, then they rise to 13,14,15, midday and then slowly drop to 7 or 8 at 10.00pm. The rise has very little to do with food, but happens as a result of my daily dose of steroid taken at 9.00am. However I am sticking very much with low carb, otherwise the spike is even higher

I have been on metformin since early February taking 1 x 500 mg for the first week, then 2 x 500 mg for the second week, and then 3 x 500 mg. for the 3rd week. I had a few stomach cramps and bouts of diarrhoea but they settled.

Last Friday I started with one of the gesture-enreritis virus (I know it's viral because I can trace the infectious pathway). I have not eaten anything since then, and only drunk water, and haven't taken my metformin. Two questions

1 My normal way back into eating after a stomach upset would be crisps and white bread toasted. I can't have those now without spiking my BG through the roof. Can anyone suggest anything that might just substitute for the crisps/white toast.

2 I haven't taken any metformin since last Thursday 3/4 days ago. Firstly because I take it with meals and I can't look one of those in the plate at the moment. Secondly because their usual side effect of diarrhoea is something I can do without any more of! When I start eating again and restart the metformin should I start again at 1per day for a week, and the progress to 2 a day, the 3, or should I go straight back at 3 a day. I realise no-one can give me medical advice, but I just thought someone might have been in a similar situation. Not that I would wish this on anyone...........
