Gastrointestinal problems

Hi,
I am a 53 year old male withT2 diabetes - diagnosed Oct 2012, currently on Gliclazide bd. Since Feb 2013 I have been experiencing gut problems - bloating, nausea and general loss of appetite. My GP thinks this is due to my diabetes - although I am having a colonsocopy in 2 weeks to exclude other things - and has suggested that I should start on insulin. He believes this will resolve the gut issues and improve my general health. Has anybody else experienced gut problems due to their diabetes and does anybody know if starting insulin will improve things?

I am intolerant to statins but this was not confirmed until they tried three or four of them out on me. One of them gave me exactly those symptoms. I had to stop them and be treated for gastro enteritis.

Of course I don't know what is causing yours but you did ask if anyone else had similar problems.

Hi

Sadly oral meds to control bg levels do have some nasty side effects for many. Some people are ok and some are not.

Try not to worry that you have something really serious going on with your digestion even though for peace of mind a colonoscopy does rule out any problems.

Its my guess that you will be better off changing to insulin than to carry on as you are. I once chatted to a man who was at my hospital eye clinic and he started telling me of the dreadful side effects a certain oral med was having on his digestion. He literally begged me to change places with him so that he could use insulin instead.

Hope your colonoscopy will go ok. I found it not too bad but was able to ask for sedation anyway. For a while I was able to watch what was going on on the monitor. Amazing how clean my insides were :P

Thanks

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Saw the diabetic specialist GP at my surgery yesterday and he mentioned gastroparesis or delayed gastric emptying as a potential and likely cause of the symptoms I am experiencing. He prescribed Domperidone and suggested eating more frequently - 6 times a day with smaller portions avoiding fatty foods and sticking to a low fibre diet.

As you say iHs, he feels insulin would be the logical progression and I agree in light of your comments.

Thanks again - hope my "insides" prove to be as clean as yours
