Hi all,

I was diagnosed a few months ago as having type 2 diabetes after having various tests done.
My diet is pretty good anyway as I like to eat healthy avoiding as many fatty foods as I can while still enjoying my life. I do need to excersise more I know but as i work for myself find it hard to build in time for the gym. Having said that I do excersise everyday for at least 30 minutes and I do cycle a lot at the weekends. I need to lose bout 5 lb to be my ideal weight so no real problems there.
I have had my feet checked, and a retinal screening has been booked for next month.
The thing is, everything I have read about diabetes stresses the importance of good management.
Bloods glucose, pressure, cholesterol etc.
When discussing this with my doctor I asked if I should be checking my blood glucose levels and he said that "we dont need to go down that road yet"
So my question is how do I know if I am doing the right thing for my body with my diet, excersise and so on if im not keeping an eye on my sugar levels.
Does anyone else play it by ear as it were.
My last A1C was 7.8 is this good, bad or average do you think.
many thanks for taking the time to read this and any advice would be appreciated.

welcome you need to test as you need to find out what kind of diet suits you you will get more advice from better qualified people than me but the standard advice is that you need to test believe me its daunting at the start but it gets easier this forum really helps

Hi Kevin
you can't know what's happening without a blood glucose meter. Try the websites of the makers and you might manage to get one free. It's the strips which usually cost a bit.
It's the cost of the strips, which has caused the PCTs to tell doctors to cut back on self testing.
I note you say you eat a healthy diet and then mention low fat. Fats ware not a problem to diabetics. They don't affect your blood sugar, nor do they cause cholesterol.
the food group you will need to watch is the carbohydrates. All carbohydrates are metabolised to sugar in the blood.
You may well be told that you MUST eat them to be healthy. that's out of date information.
you will find that controllong them in some way will make your BG control easier. Read through this forum and you'll find loads of ideas. In the "Stickies", you'll find explanations for things, In "Success Stories" you'll find what worked for a variety of people.
