Hi all! :P
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks, it was controlled with diet and my 3 weekly HBac1 (?) results were always around the 6% mark which i was told was great..most of my BS levels were within range too (still managed to produce a 10lb 3oz baby boy though lol). I was told to test after birth and thoses were also deemed fine and told if i got two under 11 at 2hrs after tea then to stop, so i did.
Baby is now 6 weeks old and im due to have my follow up GTT test in the next week or so, so yesterday i decided to test my waking level and it was 6.4 (so then re-tested and got the same or close to) and then this morning i got 6.3 on waking..when i had GD it had to be under 5.5 on waking so now im worried i have developed full diabetes with these levels and from googling normal levels it seems to vary between saying those are normal and borderline and pre-diabetes..so now im both confused aND worried!
So here i am to ask you all, am i normal? (lol)?

Hi fl
the size of your baby at birth suggests you still had quite a lot of circulating glucose, although He'd have been even bigger if you hadn't controlled your diet.
Unfortunately, it's very common for women who've had gestational diabetes to develop "Full" diabetes at some later date.
My cousin in Germany had a 12 pound baby( she's only 5feet 2 inches herself and her husband is not much taller) and in the hospital where he was born, they put him on a special diet to get him to a "normal" size.
He's now a father of 3 himself and has been healthy all his life, but my cousin developed T1 a few years later.
She too is fit and well and under good control

I found this subject particularly interesting. In the dim and distant past when I had my children medical staff weren't so forthcoming with any information. My first baby was 8lb 13ozs (sorry, we weren't metric then), then when I was expecting my second baby I was sent to the hospital for GTT and as far as I remember the results were okay and I never heard anything more about it or how it affected me, then produced a 9lb 1/2oz baby. It gets better! My third baby came into the world at 11lb 4oz!!!

Nearly 30 years later I have been diagnosed with Type 2.

What I would give to know then how I could have perhaps changed the path of my health. I have been extremely fit and healthy all these years until suddenly my pancreas decided to throw a wobbley.

The doctor who famously works with diabetic mothers is Lois Jovanovic in California. It might be interesting to read some of her work.
