Hi jodie,
Its the total carbs that you look at on the label. To eat carbs you need to know what your insulin to carb ratio is. Most people have around 1 unit for every 10 grams of total carbs. So if the pizza says it's got 80g of carbs then you take 8 units. This assumes you take short acting insulin like Novorapid.

Re: Getting confused! Help please!

I was on Novomix 30 I needed to eat fixed amounts of carbs. So I'd need to eat x amounts of carbs with my morning injection then 2 hours later I'd need y amount of carbs to stop me going hypo. You'd need to figure out what x and y is for you - I can't remember what mine were sorry it was 9 years ago when I was on it!

I am hoping that when your doctor or dsn started you off on twice daily insulin they also tried to calculate a carb allowance that you could eat at each meal time.

Unfortunately pizza and chips is fairly high in carb... A small slice is 20g carb (weighing 70g) and chips are about 10g carb for 5.

Rice is also fairly high in carb and the sauce used for the curry also contains carb. I think 2 tablespoon of cooked rice (35g weight) is about 10g carb.

If you buy the book Carbs and Cals, its a good source of carb info for twice daily insulin users listing most of the common foods eaten by people but try to eat within your carb allowance limit otherwise you will experience high bg levels which will then lead you to feeling thirsty for quite a few hours so you will be drinking lots of water or sugar free coke until your bg starts to drop.

Might be worth asking if you can go onto a basal bolus routine. Novomix is a mix of long and short acting. With basal bolus the long acting (basal) and short acting (bolus) is separate. It gives you a lot more flexibility. You can carb count (as mentioned above) and can eat, within reason, almost anything you want at any time of day.

I don't really know why they put anyone on Novomix tbh.
