I was advised by a very nice lady on here that when my monthlies arrive (sorry guys  ) my readings will seem higher.

Well guess what, I have found this out for myself. Have been testing a lot more (didnt bother at first cos diabetic nurse said not to!) and have really noticed the difference. I cannot get lower than the 8's even though I have hardly had any carbs at all.

Do other girlies notice this? Its very annoying

Hi Sue,

I noticed the same thing when I was first testing, my fasting BGs tend to be higher about a week to ten days before my period started and for two days after, then it tended to be a bit lower for the following two days!! Really annoying and I didn't understand what was going on with my numbers for the first couple of months until I noticed this pattern occuring for a few months running

Evening primrose oil seems to help me with keeping my bg down a bit at this time of the month. I went a month without it at one point and noticed that they'd risen a bit, started taking the EPO again and the next month they weren't quite as high. Might be worth giving this a go, it's good for PMT too :D

Here's a link that explains why menstruation can cause these changes in BG levels;

Hope this helps,

S :)

Hi Sirzy

Thanks for replying. Will check out the link you sent. I tried evening primrose before but found it repeats on me but will give it another go.

I really don't think we need to apologise for having this discussion.

My numbers go up whatever I do for about a week just before my period starts and only return to normal after about 7 days. This is also accompanied by serious carb cravings for 2-3 days. It can take longer for my numbers to come down again after eating, probably 2 hours or so to the fastibg levels.

Mid cycle, my numbers are absolutely normal non diabetic numbers for 2-3 days on a low carb diet (on a max of 60g carbs). They return to fasting levels well within 1 hour of eating, depending on the carb content.

I was frustrated at first when I spotted this pattern, but my understandig means that i know that I can prevent it from going too high and that it will come down again. The low mid cycle numbers give me hope that I won't have to be so strict with my diet when I have lost more weight.

I manage the carb cravings by trying to find low carb equivalets of my pre low carb comfort foods - I can make a small amount of chocolate go a very long way and have found some lower carb "stodge". However, I have never been able to replace toast and marmite (and there is no such thing as one slice of toast and marmite for me  ) and I consider myself to be a recovering crisp addict.

Well done for starting the discussion  it needs to be had. Look at the monthly patterns in your readings, ladies.

I have found that excercise helps my insulin resistance at that time of the month, although I may be more prone to excercise related liver dumps at that time. But regular excercise helps reduce insulin resistance any time of the month.

I will be following that link later - thanks!

No problem Sue :)

It's funny the useful things we uncover when we start testing our own BG levels. I'll never understand why GPs and nurses tell us not to do it!! Like most things, it's all down to money I suppose
