Hi there, need some advice please.

I am a type 1 Diabetic who injects Insulin but also takes Metformin, Atorvastatin and Ramipril.

I had to fill in a form recently which asked my blood type (which I don't know).

I have never given blood before but I have been told that you learn your blood type when you give blood.

I was thinking of killing 2 birds with 1 stone and giving blood and learning my type in the process.

Can I give blood if i am a type 1 Diabetic and I inject Insulin?

I am seeing contradictory information online and was wondering if anyone has any experience in this?

I remember looking this up myself and seeing that if you need insulin you can't give blood, but I guess it's best to ask someone at the British Heart Foundation.
 
No, Insulin dependant diabetics can not give blood.

Some Type 2s can, permitting they meet certain criteria.

"People who take insulin are not allowed to give blood, which excludes both people with type 1 diabetes and people with type 2 diabetes who are insulin-dependent.

The affect of blood donations on insulin levels is considered a risk to the donor's health. Because of this, people who are dependent on insulin are not permitted to give blood."

It's possible to find out your blood type with a blood test ordered by your doctor. In NZ most tests are free but this one is not.
