Gliclazide & NovoRapid Side Effects

Hi, my partner has been hospitalised twice in the past month, feeling severely unwell (like he was being poisoned) having started taking NovoRapid the first time and Gliclazide the second time. He was also on 54 units of Lantus and 2 x Metformin twice a day. It was only on self diagnosis that he stopped taking the new meds on both occasions and subsequently recovered within 6-8 hours of stopping them. Does anyone else have any experience of this, please? He's now taken himself off of everything except the Metformin as he's terrified it'll hospitalise him again. Sadly none of the medical staff in two different hospitals suggested stopping the meds, despite us asking several times whether it could be that causing the problem. We're desperate for some help and guidance. His symptoms included extreme fatigue, slurred speech, severe headaches, unable to focus or concentrate, tenderness around his core which we can only assume was his organs struggling with the meds, inability to stand or function. It was like he had a form of paralysis causing him to have no reflexes in his legs, etc.

Your partner needs to be checking his blood sugar levels, if he's on any blood sugar lowering medications. Is he doing this ? Do the readings correlate with his symptoms ?

Hi Geoff, yes he was doing them about 8 times a day. They still fluctuated from 4.7 - 15/16 but the feeling of being extremely ill were constant. It's a complete mystery and very worrying.

I'll wait to see what others post. Sounds unusual to have such extreme reactions. Some react badly to Metformin, but during my 4 weeks on it, I never did.
Hope you get some helpful replies !

Sorry just to confirm, so if he takes NovoRapid or Gliclazide (?or both together?) he suffers the symptoms you describe all the time but confirmed via blood tests is not having hypos?

what has his blood sugars been like prior to the Novorapid and Gliclazide? If they have been extremely high especially for a long time, plunging to lowish normal levels will trick his body in to thinking its hypoing some of the symptoms are like you describe - but everyones symptoms are different to a certain degree.

Hi, thanks for your message. So he was on Lantus and Metformin throughout both episodes of illness. The first time was triggered by NovoRapid and then as soon as he stopped taking it he made a miraculous recovery. Then the same happened the second time when he was given Gliclazide, instead of the NovoRapid, and 6 days later he was in hospital for 3 days. A few hours after he refused to take Gliclazide, he was able to discharge himself, again, having made a miraculous recovery. They have confirmed they are not hypos. His bloods were running between 8 - 14 ish before the new meds and were introduced, (ie on Lantus and Metformin only). When the NovoRapid or Gliclazide were introduced they only dropped to 7 - 14ish, only dropping to 4.7 once which did cause him a hypo.
