GlucaGen Hypo Kit

Hi,

I’ve never really thought about this as I have very good hypo awareness but after a bad hypo at work today I realised I should have one of the Hypo kits at work. My boss and HR department are very accommodating and have said it is fine to have this at work but they need to make an action plan for the first aiders. Has anyone ever had to do this and know what I can expect, I’ve never had to use the kit myself so the only information I have on how to use it is from the information leaflet in the kit itself not sure what I should be telling them!

Do they know its an injection?
General first aiders may not be allowed to use it is my only thought
 
I used to have the injection in my fridge and bring it to work (sailing, so no quick access for ambulances). I showed my captain how to use it, except for that one captain who turned rather white when I wanted to show him.
That week I simply showed one of our guests.
I've never needed it, thankfully.

Last year I had my glucagon kit replaced with Baqsimi, which is a nasal spray and much easier to administer, you might want to see if you can get one of those instead.
 
Wow, what good colleagues you have if they don't mind giving you an injection! My friends know how to inject glucagon, but I told my colleagues to put a piece of sugar on my cheek if I lose consciousness

I told my co-workers and my family that if I'm on the floor and out of it, to rub granulated sugar on my gums.

Well, it would be a choice between having their only deckhand unconscious or dying while waiting for help to arrive by boat or helicopter or bite the bullet and do the injection.
I know which I would prefer if it was my colleague!

Thankfully I've never needed the glucagon.
 
I’ve had to use it once when I had a hypo and was sick as soon as I took lucozade ( showas how long ago it was as lucozade now has a greatly reduced sugar content ) the first think I noticed was the injection isn’t “ pre loaded “ and had to be drawn up not sur e if it has to be mixed can’t remember, 2nd the needle is huge in relation to the needles we use now ,I’m lucky that I remember the original re usable syringe needles (absolute darts) . gycogel which is available on prescription is really really quick to get into the system and being a gel easy to rub on lips if being conscious is a problem
 

how do you avoid severe hypo at all with such intense physical work in combination with insulin? I usually have to eat banana/sugar even before going to the gym

Keep a close eye on my Libre and sweets in my pocket.
The main issue is that it's an unpredictable mix of long stretches of inactivity, just having small talk with my captain or the paying guests, and sudden bursts of physical work, not always predictable.
But those guests have paid to do the heavy work, so most of the job is done with a mug of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

We're drifting off topic though, happy to answer more questions on one of the chatty threads.
 
As a type 1,when I used to work security and I was given 1 store I mentioned to the store 1st aider and the 1st aider refused to take anything to do with the glucapen as they and the store hadn't been trained to use a glucapen
 
Coming from a h&s perspective , all your medical info / needs should be kept on file
 
Possibly @Jollymon but it doesn't mean that it will be funded in the area you live in. Ogluo (premixed injection instead of glucagon kit you have to mix yourself) has now been blacklisted in our area, having previously been available.
