Glucagon/gen abroad

Hello there

I’m posting to let you know ambulances in Spain (or at least Catalonia) do not carry Glucagon/gen and to ask a question.

We’re abroad in Catalonia, Spain and my wife (type 1 30 years) has just had a severe hypo episode with convulsions in her sleep.

After struggling to give her sugar & honey and not seeing a response I called 112 for an ambulance.

Luckily the sugars took effect and my wife was conscious when the ambulance arrived and we were able to go from there.

However they told us they do not carry Glucagon/gen. So I wanted to let you know this in case you are travelling and were also not aware

A Question: We’ve never had Glucagon/Glucagen at home. Is it something any T1 can ask to be prescribed? Only once before has it been needed and this was delivered by an ambulance crew.

It’s never been offered as far as I’m aware and this situation has left us feeling vulnerable, [edit:] so when back home in U.K plan on investigating getting hold of some.

any advice, helpful,

cheers

sp

I can only say that in the U.S. anyone on insulin should be able to get a prescription for Glucogon very easily. I’ve carried it since forever and it’s never far from me in case it’s needed. I would not depend on an ambulance crew or anyone else to have it on hand if I needed it. They may, they may not. Why take that chance?

As a side note, I would find it surprising if nobody ever offered to write your wife a prescription for it.

I'm in Germany and I was only given a prescription for Glucagon when I asked my endo. It seems like T1 kids are more proactively prescribed Glucagon.

I'm not sure what they cost outside of Germany, but here they're just €5 a pop (or €17 without insurance, I think) so I plan to always have one on hand and I hope they will always expire without being used.

Hi @Sugarporter, yes your GP can give you a prescription for a glucagon kit :)
I always take mine if I go away.
I hope your wife is feeling ok.
