Hi I am living in HK and have been type 2 diabetic for about two years . We don't have GPS but go straight to specialist which are funded by medical insurance . Unfortunately I keep having to change my doctor as my medical card keeps being changed by my employer.Which means it is difficult to be sure of the advice I am given on meds . I am currently taking 2000 mg a day of Glucophage SR. I believe this is the maximum dose. No advice has been given to about the times of day I should take my tablets ? My concern is that this is too high a dosage but I'm not sure what the indicators are that this is the correct level for my condition and if having elevated amounts of medication can have any complications? I would appreciate any advice on this problem .

Hi Elaine, I was on 2000mg of Metformin until quite recently. I'm now down to 1000mg. I take all 4 tablets in the evening with my evening meal. Because they are slow release (SR) they work throughout the night and day, and I was more likely to remember to take them.

Metformin can give you tummy troubles, with tummy cramps, diahorrea and even vomiting but it seems to be only while your body is adjusting to it. Now that I have been taking them for some time I don't get any of these side effects.

Do you have an idea of what your Blood Glucose levels are? Do you have a BG meter?

Hi nice to know this forum works ! I average about 5.9 to 6.5 in the morning if I exercise before breakfast my levels go to the 5.9 side of the range. How did you get your meds down to 1000 mg ? I am already none carbing and have just decided to take my readings more frequently and work out what different foods are doing to my levels. I was losing weight but this has really slowed down over the last few months.

My levels used to be a lot higher, 7.6 in June but then I found this forum and started low carbing, and have got my HBA1C down to 6.3 - I asked to have my meds reduced and the diabetic nurse agreed although she wasn't that keen. I am now trying to come off my Blood Pressure meds, maybe at my next test in 3 months time.

I think if you can demonstrate to your specialist that you are consistently getting good numbers (spreadsheet or logbook or phone app) then you should be able to get meds reduced. At the end of the day, its your body, if you don't want to put that stuff into it you don't have to, although from what I have read Metformin can have a protective effect on your heart.

Hi
I take 2000 SR metformin I take one with my breakfast and one with my evening meal. It is important to take these meds with food or at least very soon afterwards I took both my pills with my breakfast one day last week and in the early evening I had a very bad dose of the runs so I wont do that again  I reduced to 1 000 per day to try to gain weight at the recomendation of my GP but my BGs rose from 47 to 60 ,then it went back down when I upped the met again Hope this helps

Hi
I take 3 x 850mg of Metformin, one tablet with each meal. This is changing to 1000 mg twice a day - one each with breakfast and dinner.

Thanks for the answer s. any idea what halm taking Glucophage has on the body . When I wake up my readings are about 6.8 and that's after generally taking my last tablet just before I go to bed because I have forgotten to take it earlier.

Thanks for the answer the link was highly informative. I just think my level of medication is too high. Need guidance as how I can test to see if this is true ? I take a B12 supplement daily of 500 mg.
