Hi, I am a bit of a newbie to this and hope I'm asking in the right section, if not please forgive me. I have not eaten a meal today and have not been taking my tablets regularly as I keep forgetting them. I have just taken my glucose and find its high at 28.6mmol/l. Can I do anything to reduce it quickly and how high can it go before it becomes a medical emergency. Many thanks

Hi Shrekie.. I have copied this from a page on this site..Make sure you are well hydrated for one.. Best luck.
The NHS recommends that people with diabetes with a sugar level over 28 mmols/L should seek emergency advice from their healthcare team or, during out-of-hours times, contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
Maybe also set an alarm on your mobile Phone or watch to remind yourself ..Link to page below..

If I had levels above 10 I tend to drink a lot - maybe three pints fairly rapidly and then ensure I was well hydrated. Above 10 the kidneys have to start working and you will start to pass some of it.
Then I would go for a brisk 40min walks or as far as I could go. That would see my levels drop anywhere as much as 7 (which I had to do a couple of times when I was new and got caught out eating some bad food).

Although fasting is good - if it set my levels off I would consider eating things with as little (but some) carbs in I could and some fat and a little protein - veg etc. Sometimes the liver dumps glucose into the blood which is really unhelpful.

Please consider ringing 111 or getting an urgent appt at GP.

Also please get a dosette box for your meds so you can leave it out in kitchen etc as a reminder. Set alarms on phones etc. Paint a big blackboard on a wall and write down days and times with chalk and cross thru or erasee when taken.

Forgetting to take is not good, you need to make adjystments to your lufe to ensure you get reminders to take.

28 is very high and you need to take medical advice uurgently. Have you anyway to test for ketones?

It is far too high as it is, so attend to it please ... like now

If you had these levels and you had just eaten I would ask more questions, but as you have not eaten today you must drink lots of water and see a doctor as soon as you can. Turning up at A&E would not be a bad option.

Please contact emergency services if it hasn't come down. Drink loads of water as others have said, but personally I wouldn't go for a brisk walk because, certainly in my case, this would raise my levels further.

a) We've probably all skipped a meal and it's a bad idea. Try to eat regularly.

b) I think we've all done that as well, you have to introduce some ideas to make it less likely. Personally, I have all my meds in a small sandwich box on the table. Just relies on me sitting down to eat or have a cup of something in the morning and evening. It usually works. It will become routine, eventually.

c) I wouldn't offer any further advice as I'm not a medic but drinking water is good. I'm always thirsty when my BG goes up anyway.

d) diabetes.co.uk say 33 mmol/L, get proper medical advice as soon as possible.

Diabetes is a very serious condition and requires quite a lot of thought and planning, all the best.
