I was diagnosed with Diabetes 8 weeks ago and i am on tablets twice a day, my original reading was 18.9 and since taking the tablets its still in the double figures most of the time, ive cut out the suar and sugary drinks, and i am watching what im eating too, so i cant understand why my levels are still high, do i need to change my medication? I live in ireland and i am still waiting to see a specialist about it. can anyone give me some advice on what i should or should'nt be doing? as im still pretty much in the dark about the whole thing. Thank you!!!!!! :? :?

Hi Linda, and welcome to the forum.

You're in good company here, lots of helpful people with great experience.

Your diet will have much more influence on your blood sugars than oral medications. Well done for ditching the sugars, but what other foods do you eat regularly?

All the best,

fergus

WE can't give you a diagnosis, but we can make suggestions. Are you eating starchy foods? Starch changes to glucose in the body.
Metformin alone cannot bring your Blood sugar down very much. If you reduce your starches, Bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, starchy roots like parsnips. the numbers will come down.
Get a carb book. The Collins Little Gem only costs about £5. that will tell you where the carbohydrates are and help you keep them down.

Hi

Metformin does take a while before it starts to work so don't panic, and cutting out sugar (also honey and jam) will help too but also you will need to cut down on carbs too. it will take a while and you may find that you feel strange when your blood glucose levels drop (read about hypoglycemic symptoms and how to treat it) even though your blood glucose is at normal levels because your body is not used to having blood glucose levels so low. A blood glucose meter is useful for indicating how certain carb foods affect your bg levels.
