From time to time when I check my pre breakfast blood there are hypos and I take glucose. I find that I only need about a third of one tablet to raise my blood sugar to an acceptable level ie above 4.

I understand that three tablets are the norm .....

We are all different and what works for others may be too much for others and not enough for some

There is no 'norm' @asparagusp , it would depend on where you start from. If you're down at 2(ish) you might need 6 or more tablets to get above 4, and it would also depend on YOU and how sensitive you are to carbs etc.

How low does your blood glucose go?
Is your blood glucose dropping because of medication or is it a natural drop?

Thanks Sauron. Thank God I don't have to woof down the three! They are ghastly!

Urban racer, thanks too. The most recent was a couple of days ago when the pre breakfast reading was 3.3. I had a small amount and 15 minutes, I took another reading, 3.8. A little more and 15 minutes latter. 4.8.

Yes I am on medication, namely insulin, 8 units and Gliclazide. I have already halved my dosage of evening Gliclazide and reduced the insulin. Five hypos in a week prompted the change. However the problem remains as does high post prandial hyperglycaemia.

That is true in some respects, as the OP is a insulin user it also depends on if you have active insulin on board (from a previous bolus) and how low (and how fast) your bg levels are dropping.

You have 2 medications with the potential to induce hypo's. Are you taking them at the same time?

A few more questions;-
What type of insulin are you on?
Have you tried cutting down on carbs to reduce your post prandial levels?
Have you only started getting hypers since you cut down your dosage?
