Glucose test meters. Type1.

Hi out there! Recently diagnosed T1 and am wondering what type of BG meters are available on the NHS? In my dreams one that accepts recording half units of insulin, predicts how much insulin if BG is high and oooo no finger pricking... As I said, in my dreams, any advice would be great.

Health trusts do deals with manufacturers. Your local heath trust will (most likely) be handing the same meter to every new T1.

To the best of my knowledge, you will not get a choice.

There's more money in prescription test strips than in meters, so most distributers will give type ones a freebie if you contact them - usually via their websites. Personally, I find the Accu Chek Mobile to be convenient, but also have a Bayer Contour USB and Abbott Freestyle.

the Bayer contour is a good meter and quite common......

i use the link model which works alongside the medtronic pump.....

there are many though and to be honest they all do a good job.......

Funnily enough, almost everything on your check list (minus the finger pricking!) point to the medtronic pump! When you do your blood sugar, it sends it wirelessly to the pump, then you put in the amount of carbs you're eating & it works out exactly how much insulin you need. It even does a correction dose if your sugars are high & you're not even eating! I love mine.

Thanks for your response, I now know what to look out for!

I use the freestyle optium neo at the moment.... Ive learnt how to input insulin amounts in the meter at meal times.... then I read about the importance of calculating existing insulin etc before giving the next insulin injection!!!! Ho my days! Ive never considered it - hence the need for a meter that helps me out. Thank you
