Glucose testing gestational diabetes

I was wondering if I could get a wee explanation. I was recently went to have a blood test for gestational diabetes. It was a fasting test. I was unsure about if water counted so checked a few websites and all said no food or drink except water. I had a small glass of water but was strongly told off for doing so and told that the test was no longer accurate and I would need to come back. When I explained that I had checked the NHS website re glucose testing for gestational diabetes I was told it was wrong and I shouldn't have looked at it (despite being recommended for common queries by midwives). There was another girl there who had done exactly the same thing. I was wanting to know the rationale behind no water. Any info I look up all states water is allowed so if anyone could help I would appreciate it.

@rhowe I have Type 1 so obviously didn't have to have the GD test, but having spoken to other pregnant ladies at my clinics it seems the GD test can vary slightly so it could be that different tests/doctors have different rules. I spoke to ladies that had 1 hour tests and others who had 3 hour tests. One also had a urine test.

Ideally, you should have been given precise instructions about what fasting meant - eg no food or liquid after midnight, or whatever, and then there would have been no confusion.

If I was you, I'd double check (possibly with more than one person) what exactly is required of you before the test regarding food and drink. Sometimes I've found that instructions can be quite vague so don't feel bad about asking precisely what you have to do.

Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy
