Glucose Tolerance Test

I am type 2 and my life over the last few years has been chaos. My GP seems to know very little about diabetes and the local hospital diabetic centre staff seem no better. I had feet problems and my GP finally referred me for a glucose tolerance test and I scored 12. He wasn't bothered and said I should try to diet and that was it. I thought the Gold Standard for type 2 was 11.1 and anyone scoring at that level or more was type 2 and needed to go on Metformin. I finally did get onto Glucophage SR with some difficulty but even then my GP's dosage advice was at odds with the leaflet in the box! I took control myself and I have managed to control my BG down to reasonable levels but I spent 8 months with a very high BG before I got treatment. Anyone else have the same problems?

Welcome MM to a club no-one wants to belong to

You ask "Anyone else have the same problems?"

Most of us - that's why we are here. Even well informed Drs do not appreciate the real problems we have, both newly diagnosed & after years of struggle. Two of us went to a Diabetes UK conference on "Self management." You will find it reported & discussed on this thread.

Have you had full blood tests for diabetes? There is a useful measurement HbA1c which reports your average blood glucose over 2-3 months. That is the figure they should use for medication (if necessary) & management. Always ask for a printout of the results - you will understand the significance through the years.

Have you been given diet advice?

Have you been told about blood glucose meters which many diabetics use to help maintain control?

As your questions & we will try to help. Hopefully you will be able to face the New Year with confidence about your health
