I am pre-T2 and hopefully keeping daily carbs well below 100 it will stay that way :)

However, apart from a three monthly HbA1C check, it would be reassuring to monitor BG more often.
I am also not at all happy about puncturing my skin to take blood samples.

I read, googling, that glucose urine tests seem only to be performed in clinical situations.

Surely it's possible to do this at home?

But if so,how?

When I was diagnosed, I was issued with urine sticks for testing. I never, ever had glucose show in my urine.

How could that be? Was I ever diabetic at all?

The answers are, unfortunately very simple. Urine strips will show up glucose in the urine, but only when it reaches roughly 10, or above in the blood. A blood score of 10 (unless very close to eating) is generally accepted as too high in diabetics, never mind pre-diabetics.

I would suggest urine strips are the glucose testing equivalent of a chocolate teapot.

Ketone testing by urine strips can be useful, but they are different strips, and to be honest, unless you are Type 1, or eating well below 100gr carbohydrate a day, you are unlikely to have any ketones anyway.

If your issue is discomfort from finger pricks, it's not that bad, and most of us worko ut a way of achieving pain-free finger pricks. If you are concerned about the impact on your budget, there are meters and strips (the strips are the consumables, so the part we need to be concerned about) that are more modest than most.

Many of us use the SD Codefree meter and strips from Homehealth. They also offer a decent discount for buying in bulk; meaning 5 or 10 pots. The discount brings the strips down by about 25%.
