hello, my 9 yr old son is type 1 and next year we will be going abroad for the first time. I wondered if anyone could recommend a good insurance company to get the travel insurance from.

Thankyou

I used to use the holiday firms insurance which was usually Axa who I had to phone to be screened and had to pay nearly double for a single return trip, as we were going abroad a few times a year I decided to see what a yearly insurance would cost, I filled in Axa's online form but still had to phone up to be screened, after answering all the questions I was told there was no increase to which I asked, when I have your insurance with Thomson I was always charged more to which he replied, Thomson charge the extra cost not Axa so the last ten years I've insured direct with Axa at no extra cost because of my type 1 diabetes.

Avoid Axa like the plague! They are horrendous and if you google reviews on them you will be shocked. If you really do have a medical emergency abroad - My brother did (not diabetic related) - they were dreadful to deal with. They are not based in uk, never returned calls and my sister in law clocked up a £500 mobile bill, hotel and food costs of £2000+ which they have not paid for. Only flight home and after an agonising fortnight of fighting their case the medical bill. I'm sure you will find plenty of others. Be warned by offers such as John Lewis, M&S and several banks and travel agents - they use Axa. One other tip: any company that agrees to cover existing medical conditions over the phone - get them to put that in writing. Axa tried to deny such a phone call took place with my brother.

I can only speak from my experience with Axa and when I was hospitalised abroad there were no problems.

Glad all was fine as I'm sure some are but more often than not people have had real problems. It's a choice. I won't touch them with a barge pole!
