I haven't come off and gone back on again but I did a lot of research before I got mine and one of the things I read was that something like 70% of pump users give up on them in the first year. The nurse who quoted this figure on her website said that she felt it was because most pump users do not use MOST of the functionality of their pump. So they don't use the Wizard, they don't set alternative basal rates for different types of day, they don't vary basal rates (for activity etc), they don't learn how to use extended boluses, dual/square boluses (I'd add super boluses to that list) and so on. And she said it takes about a year to really learn how to use a pump effectively.
So I decided not to take it easy but to learn to use all my pumps features one by one.
I learned on here and I bought several books and studied them. I keep records of my blood sugar etc (I actually do let that slide every now and then but I reinstate my records when I think I need to ).
I actually got my pump because my sister, who was diagnosed 20 years later than me and in France) was given one straight away and immediately and in the following years had better control than me.
When I last saw her, at Christmas, I had overtaken her in terms of control and what did I find? She was not using any of the pumps features - just simple basal and manual boluses. We sat in the corner of the room in a huddle and set up her Wizard together.
So, sorry this was so long, and really it is all guesswork but I really recommend becoming best friends with your pump!
