No, I'm not trying to avoid having any more lambs. Having read up on it, I've decided to start taking low dose Metformin. It's not for BG control, I'm at a constant HbA1c of 5.9 (or probably lower now) and I know it doesn't change BG much anyway, particularly at minimum dose for someone on already lowish BGs. It's more for the preventative properties in terms of future Cardio Vascular episodes that I read about. Can't see a downside, so went for it. My doctor was reluctant on the basis that my BG was fine and I wasn't overweight (BMI 22), in fact he said it would be an "unlicensed use"! :think: However, I bullied him with charm and he gave in as usual. :thumbup: I told him I wanted to go straight on to the SR version - didn't want any excess droppings! He agreed so that's what I've been on for a few weeks. 2X500mgs. I take one in the morning and one in evening with food "as directed", although I read on the leaflet that you can take them all in one hit whenever. Just feel spreading them out seems right.
No side effects at all. No real effect on BG as expected, although fasting BG perhaps down half a point.
Must get round to changing my "signature" now when I work out how.

Take 3 of the little marvels each day, one with brekkie and two with dinner, just the standard stuff. Highly recommended but once you are fasting at say sub 6.5ish the most it will do is knock around another 0.5mmol off fasting and on say a 50g carbish main meal stop that spiking by around 1.0 mmol. If you do a ULC main meal reduce it spikey effectiveness to around 0.5 mmol, if you do a carb fest don't expect it do more than a 2.0 mmol repair job, you'll need a stronger tool like gin for that (not recommended of course :angel: ). I do notice a significant difference to spikeyness if I forget to take it or take it late.

But you know me every little helps! Anything that keeps your BG's as stable and in a near normal range is good by me so long as they aren't doing it by stressing out my already overworked panc.
 
Ahem-back on topic gentlemen if you please. (Honestly-what are they like?)

I too asked GP for metformin recently Sheepie. Partially to help with the bg's (not that I know what they are :roll: ) but more for the preventative properties which I learned..erm learnt..which is it?..found out about on this forum.

The HCP's never mention these facts. This forum rocks. :clap:

Don't forget cancer, just google it (ie protective)
However if I don't think I'll be using it in the near future. I already get told my HbA1c is 'trop bien equilibre' (too well controlled)

Anything that protects our long-term health has to be seen in a positive light Grazer. I've been advised to start taking a statin despite having excellent cholesterol results, consultants is of the opinion it will be beneficial to my cardio health 10-15 years down the road, still sitting on the fence a little but seriously thinking of starting on a low-dose later in the year.
