Going to party for first time since diagnosis.

Heya guys. I'm a type 1, and am 17 years old. I was diagnosed only a few months ago. I've been dealing with it pretty well, and my control is fairly good for how long I've been managing it.

I live in north Scotland and it's halfway through my summar holidays. I live in an area where there are fairly frequent parties and binge drinking at them is the norm. I've been abstaining from drinking since I got my diabetes until I get used to it, however, tomorrow night I'm going to be going to a party and drinking properly for the first time since I got my diabetes.

I have discussed this with my diabetic nurse and will be checking what precautions to take, but I wanted to ask for some advice from people who will have experienced this; drinking heavily for the first time as a diabetic, and check if anything I'm doing is particularly harmful.

By the way, I'm on a basal/bolus (I think that's the name) scheme, an injection of Novorapid with any meal or snack, and one injection every night of Glargine/Lantus. At the party I will be primarily drinking what I usually do: Rum with coke, although will almost certainly end up drinking at least a little of other drinks.

What I believe I am supposed to do (but unsure about) is do things normally throughout the day, and have a small carby snack before I start drinking. I am unsure as to the size of this snack. Will a bagel (about 50g worth of carbs, so normally 5 units of insulin for me) be appropriate? Or, since I drink Rum with Coke (and the coke has a lot of sugar in it) should I have no snack at all? Throughout the night I will continually check my levels and take glucose tablets if I find myself getting low. I will have an extra carby snack (again, how large?) at some point throughout the night, perhaps when the whole thing is beginning to round up.

Is that kind of the right thing to do? Will it be a huge problem that I'm not drinking Diet Coke, etc? Quite unsure as to how this will all work, so any advice or help is appreciated.

Drink will bring your blood down yes I would try diet coke and perhaps one or two with normal cola no more than 150ml this will give you 1.5 carbs , your blood might go up but don't give quick acting insulin at all will you be in one place or moving round pubs - dancing as this will bring down your blood 2 ! And have some long acting carbs before you sleep no matter what your blood is ie chips or pizza if on the way home or 2 toast with coffee if your home. If your high in the morning then deal with it but not at night as the liver can only do one thing at a time and it will get rid of the drink 1st so if you go hypo it won't dump glucose to keep you safe until you wake ! Have a nice time and you will feel how you now react being diabetic you will learn in time as we are all diff hope I've been some help with what I have said keith. :)
