Going to Thailand

Help! I'm a newly diagnosed T2 diabetic on diet control, who has a holiday to Thailand booked for November :D . Now as a traveller I am pretty experienced, but as a diabetic I'm clueless. Been to Thailand many times before, (stir fry and carb eating), but can't think what else was on the menu. How much damage would a stir fry inflict on my body? Any ideas for snacks, and please don't say take an apple, that I can carry with me, as I already realised that small meals several times a day work better for me than the three meals a day with a starchy food recomended by the doc. Also, since the plane meals ain't too great how do you deal with long haul flights?
As it is I am still getting my head round having diabetes, and trying to keep my Bs at sane levels. (What is a sane level after a meal by the way and at what stage should I get concerned)?
I would ask my doc, but since she has been less than helpful so far, and in fact most of my learning is via the internet, I'm going to give her a miss.
This site is great !
Thanks a bunch.

A confused Anne

Hi - if you email me what u ate there - i am not to keen on thai food - I will look up carb content for you. I went to thailand before I had kids and cannot remember much about food other than noodles!

Pack plenty of dextrosol just in case and take some packed snacks - maybe even things you do not normally eat in your case and hand luggage - mayve some dried fruit, rice cakes , wholegrain crackers, cereal bars . They may just be stand bys. Ask the airline about food too - I have found in the past that some have been helpful with pateints on various types of diets.
Ask your doctor for a covering letter re insulin and snacks and take extra. A dietitian I know who is a Type 1 tells everyone to split the insulin etc up - she was mugged in barcelona and had her insuln in her bag - luckily she had some in her hotel room.
Don.t drink too much alcohol when flying - may cause havoc with bS and also make you dehydrated.
hope that helps.

Hi Anne,

I've been to Thailand and loved it. The food is very varied. You will be able to find seafood, meats, lots of veg and all sorts of international foods.

Eating on the plane is always difficult. My view is just eat what you enjoy. A couple of days eating plane rubbish isn't going to foul up your long term control.

The main thing about Thailand is to under pack. You can buy fabulous silk and cotton clothing as well as fake everything for a fraction of the prices here.
