This is an online magazine that I have just been perusing whilst waiting for the washing to finish.
This is recommended under the health pages as a typical days diet for diabetics

Breakfast:
Bowl of porridge made with semi skimmed milk or 2 slices of wholemeal toast with marmalade
Mid morning snack:
A banana
Lunch:
Granary bread sandwich with ham, tomato and lettuce. Fresh fruit salad
Afternoon snack:
One low fat yoghurt or some berries
Dinner:
Grilled chicken breast with vegetables and new potatoes. Small bowl of ice cream (not low-fat) for pudding
Top tip
It is essential that people with diabetes take regular physical exercise as well as eating a healthy, balanced diet. Diabetes

It is awfully funny !

This is what I would consider more up to the mark:

Breakfast:
scrambled eggs made with cream and butter, smoked trout, tomato.

Mid morning snack:
macadamia nuts

Lunch:
chicken salad with olive oil
berries and double cream

Afternoon snack:
cheese and an apple

Dinner:
rib eye steak, fahita seasoning, fry in macadamia nut oil.
red and green peppers, shallots, spring onions.
guacamole, salsa, sour cream.

1-2 glasses dry red wine

slice of melon/some grapes/celery/cheese

Top tip
It is essential that people with diabetes take regular physical exercise as well as eating a healthy, balanced diet together with adequate blood sugar monitoring.
 
You can live for an indefinite time on fatty meat. It has been done. I prefer the salads and veggies to fatty meat

Just to add my experience here, the above "menu" pretty much sets out what I eat (or can eat) during the course of the day, except for a few changes. As some of you will know from my previous postings, part of my digestive system (at the lower end) is missing. As a result, I suffer from vitamin deficiencies, dehydration if I am not careful and a host of other complications. My food, as my surgeon and gastroenterologist so eloquently put it, only "visits" and it is difficult to absorb sufficient nutrients. I therefore have to follow a pretty low residue diet low in roughage. That rules out from the above list porridge, wholemeal toast (I can only eat white bread), berries (as anything with seeds can cause a blockage), many vegetables (I can only eat the flowery part of cauliflower or brocolli, parsnips, carrots and swede). I HAVE to eat either pasta, bread, rice or potatoes with every meal to have a hope of absorbing anything.

Katharine's diet seems like heaven to me but I can't eat eggs, fish can be a problem, can't eat tomatoes, any kind of nuts, salad (leafy vegetables/salads are particularly off limits), can't eat an apple unless I peel it, peppers are too, shall we say, irritating to my digestive system :oops: , any kind of onions are off limits, can't drink alcohol because of some of my medications and on top of everything else, I can't exercise because of I have mobility problems coupled with two hernias for good measure!!!

Perhaps I should go and get a gun now .... :lol:

Oh Jackie,

That sounds miserable. You've got to do whatever you have to do to keep well. I wish you could have more fun with food.

Ok..
Maybe you do find it scary but it sounds like the sort of things I would be ok with eating.

I also hate fatty meat so tend to go for leaner cuts. I do love loads of veggies and fruit though.

I should add that I am type one so don't need to low carb.

I'll be honest, some days it can be miserable. It doesn't stop me eating the occasional "off limits" food but I do fret for a few hours afterwards in case it has consequences. On the whole though, like anything else, it is something you get used to. The upside to it is that I can eat more than most other people because of the lack of absorbtion so it is not all doom and gloom!! :D

No wonder there are so many ill people around.

Just think if you dump all those starches and sugars and replace them with vegetables, salad, meat, fish and beneficial fats how many more micronutrients you could fit in.
 
why don't they just say "eat fourteen tablespoons of sugar" and be done with it?!

sorry, that was an extreme reaction and should probably be removed but my god, does none of these publications even slightly suggest at the alternative??

I mean, even a little subline of "some diabetics have found that reducing total carb intake has improved their bgs" would be a ray of sunshine!
