Got me a testing kit......

Hi all

I was told I have Type 2 about 4/5 weeks ago. This was based upon a Glucose tolerance test result of 10.1, taken 12 months ago, and a fasting test of 7.1, 6 weeks ago. The first test result of 10.1 was taken 12 months ago, I wasn't diagnosed then as the GP forgot to ring me....last phrase was "if its OK we won't contact you".....

In the last 5 weeks I have put myself on a diet, stopped sugar in tea & coffee and everything else and taken up some exercise. So far I have lost just under a stone (from 17st 9 lb to 16 st 11lb) and think I'll crack the stone loss this week.

I bought myself a test meter and have been testing myself first thing of a morning, just before each meal and then 1 and 2 hours after each meal, and sometimes more often, if I get wayward (high) or unexpected results.

My first reading of a morning (usually about 6:30am) is around 7.1 / 7.3 but never below 7, except once when it was 6.6...and I don't know why.

Generally I record a reading between 7.4 and 8.0 1 hour after a meal (except once when I ate a "diet" lolly ice with...13g of sugar in it, never again!) and the readings are around 6.8 - 7.1 two hours after a meal. I have noticed in the two weeks I've had the meter a downward trend in the results. My diet has changed dramatically, and I inspect everyting carefully, on the packet etc, before I eat it. I am learning what I can and can't eat.

Do you think the resulst of the BG testing are reasonable ? Can stress (work related ..Ugh!) or another illness (cold or dental abcess) effect test results?

Cheers

It sounds as if you're definitely getting your head around things.

Some people get a liver dump of glucose just before they get up, this is the body getting energy to get working for the day. Both stress and illness can push levels up. Things sold as healthy and low fat quite often have sweeteners added to make them taste better, but your doing the right thing in checking packets for carb content. You've done well loosing the weight too.

Hi Corker, well done with the changes you have made, it sounds like you are heading in the right direction. I have been low carbing since July and its only in the last week or two that my early morning numbers have come down below 6. I think they are the most stubborn of the BG readings. Our forum friend Grazer recommends not eating after 8pm the evening before, to get your fasting numbers down, but I haven't managed that so far, I don't get home till 7 most days.

The other thing to try is an evening walk after dinner, it can really help bring the evening numbers down and that often dictates the morning fasting ones also.

Keep up the good work!

Hi Corker

Its such an interesting stage, finding out what you can and can't eat. I aim for <7.8 at 2 hours . I barely test anymore (10 months in), just new foods and occasiional randoms just to keep an eye on things.

Re the morning read - I gave that up very early on as others have mentioned the dawn phenomenon can mess it up. I could never get a read <7 until 1 day I took my meter up to bed with me and did a read the moment I woke, before toilet/shower etc. I then got reads in the 6's so I stopped bothering. As I thought there's nowt much I can do about it.

I can influence my post meal reads - so I'll only worry about what I can influence - the rest wll follow.

Well done on what you've achieved so far

Mary x
