Gotta get back on track!!!!!!!!

After several years off track, I need inspiration to get back on it again!

January 2009, after several bouts of various colds and other infections, I finally got told I was diabetic. It was almost a relief as I was constantly ill and felt rotten regardless of chucking processed foods and only eating low salt, low fat, fresh foods. My hba1c in those days was 17.6 and fasting blood sugar 13.8 in my first round of tests. My doctor was adamant that I was going on insulin within 3 months and started me on Metformin 500mg twice daily.

Dazed, I went home and started surfing looking for help. I found this forum, and some more over my home country in Scandinavia and was impressed by the results people had achieved. I dropped all bread, pasta, potatoes and rice, added cream, nuts and a load of buttered veg. The results were great, 3st weight loss in 2 months and great blood sugars. But typically, I am a carboholic and not happy how things are. I have put a little bit of weight back on (about 1/3 of what I lost altogether) but am not feeling great. My Metformin is now doubled and I just want to feel healthy again. I suppose this story should be enough to get me back on the plan but I do love the carbs. A lot...

So now, I am preparing. Reading. Getting rid of the naughties and starting to plan for meals. Buying quality meat and veg. All lovely and so good for me, but I have lost the mind set. Oh dear!!! I hope I can find it soon, so if you see my mind set, please send it my way!

Getting rid of the naughties strikes me as very sensible. I'd just made a gorgeous loaf of bread when I decided to change my diet to law carb (last week!) - so it went in the freezer. If it's not there I don't eat it. Shopping is, and has always been, a danger time, but I managed this week. I am lucky to not be doing my old, stressful job these days, so have the luxury of being able to be kind to myself.

I wish you well for getting back on track. It sounds like you've done it once, so you know you can do it. Was the 3st weight loss down to a low carb diet? I haven't lost any weight since Tuesday.

hi, welcome back, maybe all it takes is to decide to do the right thing once, your next meal, forget long term, just do it next time, once you achieve that goal, set yourself another goal (the next meal) at that point its only a short step from having an on track day, hey presto your on track :) all it took was very simple goal, now your starting to feel better and have a sense of achievement which may inspire you to complete another day.... oh look theres your mind set, it was just lying there on the floor but you couldnt see it, so in 48 hours your on track, youve turned things around, youve undone any bad that was before, now you can be smug nd know your doing well and doing the right thing...... ok rewind 48 hours, its right now and you have a target, your next meal, good luck, let us know how successful you have been

Thanks for your messages, that was exactly what I needed!

Rosie, yes I believe all my weightloss was due to low carbing. I placed an order with one of the low carb online shops so I had sweeties etc for my cravings. I only weighed myself one every couple of weeks as I fluctuate a lot and I didn't want to get obsessed. After all my aim was my blood sugars and the weight was sort of secondary.

Thanks Andy, I think you may be right! There has been a glimpse of my motivation! I will do the right thing, one meal at the time... :D

I think I will start weighing every couple of weeks. Ultimately I do need to lose a lot of weight, but for now I want to get the blood sugars better as my priority. I've been stupidly weighing every day this week, when I know I can fluctuate by 3 or 4 lb easily. I've felt disappointed yesterday to show no weight loss at all since Tuesday, as i thought at least I'd lose water!

A few years ago i did a mindfulness dieting course, which started with getting myself in the mindset to stop dieting. This might sound stupid when you're obese, but it worked for me. As soon as I stopped totally obsessing about food, feeling disgusted when i failed to diet, feeling hungry and stressed, I started to lose tiny amounts of weight - even though I was eating what I wanted. I've lost 3 stone that way, but obviously didn't bother to control my blood sugar. I think my mind might now be ready to take me that next step and I feel that low carb is going to be my way.

I know it will be difficult to lose weight with the gliclazide, but maybe that dose will soon be able to come down. That's what's in the back of my mind.

I also have a lot of weight to lose, around 7 stone. Currently I only take metformin 1g twice daily and losartan 50mg once daily so weightloss isn't an issue from medication point of view. Otherwise of course it's a different matter... ;)
There is a huge chance your meds will reduce as you continue to eat less carbs so the weight will drop easier too. I'll be doing this to feel better and if the weight comes down it's all the better. I weighed myself yesterday and won't be getting on the scales again soon. I definitely have obsessive tendencies and they will ruin all the good work if I let them.

I need to work on this for a proper change of lifestyle for good rather than a temporary measure since I see the end results of badly managed diabetes in my work in operating theatres...

Yes, this has all come to a head because my knee replacement op has been cancelled after pre-op bloods showed too high bloods sugar. It's a good thing really. I need to stop ignoring the diabetes and the weight. Maybe if the weight comes down the knees might hold up better, though the crumbling bone won't come back! Still, I can already walk further and for longer than I could this time last year. Losing 7 stone would also suit me fine, 8 would probably be better :)

Sometimes things come to a head and kick us in the backside. In our case, it's probably a blessing in disguise as it forced us to stop and take heed. I know that bones don't regenerate but less weight on any joint is a good thing and will slow down any arthritic changes and alleviate pain etc. And if your sugars come down, you will be able to have your op and get back on track with your health again!

i may be weird.....ok i am weird but.... i found weighing myself everyday to be positive, when i had lost weight i felt great and it inspired me to continue what i was doing, when i had gained a couple of pound it inspired me to try harder that day, so it was win win (remember the weirdness) :)

It is such a personal thing, weighing. I find that I fluctuate hugely from day to day, can be anything up to 5 pounds. It is confusing and upsetting for me and that is why I don't weigh myself ever more than weekly.

People find that different things work individually. Things may change as time goes on, who knows. :woot:

I don't even weigh myself- I get my husband to weigh me and just say what I've lost. I'm planning on telling the DN to do the same as knowing what I weigh just seems outfacing so I give up. I'd lost nearly five pound last at weigh in last Tuesday and will weigh again tomorrow before DN first appointment. It's whatever works for you. I am not thinking of this as being on a diet as that is something you cheat on, or put off ill it suits you- this is a lifestyle change that can be as fast or as slow as I like as long as the monitor shows steady levels.

I agree with Andy, I weigh every day. It isn't obsessive with me, just something I do each day, first thing and nekkid :) It gives me my first insight to how I'm going and how I went the day before although I have noticed that if I've had a bad day it doesn't show on the scales until two days after oddly. I know that it's recommended to only weigh once a week but that has never suited me. As with everything else, it's all individual :D

@skal You are going to be fine. I think Andy's advice about only looking ahead to the next meal is excellent. Trying to do it all at once is too hard but little goals are achievable and it's true that as soon as you do something that makes you feel better.....your'e off!

Good Luck and keep us up to date okay?

I think weighing is always a topic calling for much discussion. It is so important to follow your instinct and do what is right by you!! What I like about this forum is that there is not much nastiness, at least as far as I have seen. It then means that people will feel relaxes about contacting and asking for advice/ opinion / support.

Anyway, the plan for tomorrow... I'm on nights tonight and have some veg soup and low carb eye bread from home. In the morning, it will be a fried egg and bacon before bed and then I will be making my pork and beef meatballs in tomato sauce with soya pasta and salad.... I have to go shopping so will get nuts and ground almonds to try some of the bisquit and cracker recipes. :( Not good on nights..

Nights - poor you. Be kind to yourself and let us know how you get on keeping on track.

Well, a quick update...

Last 2 days were a complete car crash... Meals were all ok, meatballs, salad, eggs...

Then, as I was tidying up, I found a big bar of chocolate, and promptly ate it all. It was totally impossible for me to throw it away or give it away... Felt **** the next day so are more carbs.

Reset the hard drive for today and the massive carb cravings are already here. Plan for the day: Greek yogurt with blueberries and raspberries and seeds for brekkie. Salad with ham and feta for lunch. Veg soup for dinner, and some home toasted and peppered nuts for snack.

I have evoked all my willpower to resist cakes, sandwiches and most importantly, crisps...

be strong :) feel the victory

Have you finished on nights now? Will that make it easier. I know I crash an burn so easily when I'm tired and stressed. In my former job I was often both - in fact being tire an stressed was my life for 27 years. No wonder I put on weight!

Throw out the rubbish food. If it's not there you can't eat it (says she who downed a bottle of cider yesterday because it was staring at me from the kitchen!). Buy yourself a tasty low carb treat - it'd be smoked salmon for me, with a poached egg.

Yes, I finished nights Monday morning. I'm not particularly stressed or tired, I just love carbs and junk food. And have no will power to resist anything... I just need to get into the mind set really, thus the resetting of the hard drive. So far so good today.:nailbiting:

Phew, yesterday was a triumph. Carbs are haunting me though, I dreamed of crisps and dip. ..

Today, one of my colleagues gave me a potato Bindi and it is in the fridge... Gratefully, I accepted and have decided to freeze it for a special occasion. The curry is talking to ne, enticing me but I will resist its siren call and eat my low carb lunch instead....:angelic:

I am going to try the crustless quiche tonight with a salad too, and try and resist the lush potatoes:wideyed:

Well, another good proof for a type 2 to have a meter just happened. Mine is broken so have been unable to test at home, and as a part of my denial process, thought it was ok..

I work at a hospital so have picked up testing here and this morning, after 2 low carb days, my bg was 10.8. Sooooooo not good! I suspect a dawn phenomenon so will probably start having a chunk of cheese before bed.

I am feeling a heck of a lot better already, but am haunted by carbs still. :(

I desperately need a new meter so will be looking into getting one as I am lucky with my gp and he prescribes strips.
