GP or home testing for my non diabetic husband?

My husband has all the 'criteria' that point to diabetes/prediabetes. Can I test his bg at home or should he go to the GP? If I test using my monitor when is the best time, fasting or pre/post meal? Will that show prediabetes and what sort of level should I look for?
Thanks!

Have you tested him at all? What were the results? If not, perhaps you could do a strict fasting test on waking. Then test him before and 2 hours after a meal where he has eaten the same things as you, test yourself at the same time, and compare the results. Then you will have more of an idea. as to whether he needs to go to the GP.

I suggested last night that he did a fasting test this morning but he got up before me, took the dog out then had his breakfast. If he eats the same as me it will be low carb so that wouldn't work but I will see what he is having for lunch and maybe test then.

I have doubts about my own husband, mainly because of his waist line and what he stuffs in his mouth. However, I cannot get him to test. He refuses point blank. He isn't afraid of the lancets, blood, or pain. He just has his head in the sand. He has an annual MOT at the docs and relies on that, but never asks for his blood print outs, and because he doesn't get called back he assumes all is well. His last one was November, but he refuses to believe things can change. Its like banging my head against a brick wall!

I would pack him off to the docs if you are worried. Vein blood tested in a lab is more accurate than finger blood tested on a home meter, I believe.

I am just so glad my prediabetes was picked up and that was purely by chance and as he has a few of the pointers (waist size, family member and what he eats) I think he should keep an eye on it.

bluetit he also has his head in the sand and says I haven't got diabetes or pre diabetes cos the doctor said so! if he has a test it will be to keep me happy or probably to shut me up!

If he is willing for you to test him, then I would do so. The morning fasting one is probably the best indicator, but also the pre and post meal one should show if there might be a problem.

Hello my grown up son was showing 'diabetes criteria' thirst, tiredness and his words peeing a lot etc so I made him let me test his BS and thankfully the reading was in the 5's, told him to go to his GP anyway to get checked out and lo and behold, it was cholesterol that was causing the symptoms, his reading was 6.5 and now he is on a very low fat diet ( he's vegetarian) and statins !
Hope all goes well with your hubby:)

Men eh what are they like.. my husband because he takes blood pressure tablets and prenisolone for polymylegia had his routine yearly blood test a couple of weeks ago when he saw the doctor this week he said his glucose level was a bit raised.. H did not ask what it was... so he wants him to have another blood test next week.My husband did agree for me to test him before and after the evening meal that day before it was 6.8 We both had a chicken stir fry which he had a nan bread with because he likes them. For dessert I had my usual berries and greek yogurt he had a fresh pear and banana with a fruit yogurt after 2 hours his level was 8.3 which I didn't think was to bad cosidering the bread fruit and yogurt he had..
.I am prediabetic so I do reduced carbs and no sugar stuff but my husband has the biggest sweet tooth and loves biscuits cakes ice cream jam and anything else sweet he also eats a lot of bread .I know if he is pre or diabetic he will find all that very hard to give up because he says that is practically everything he enjoys to eat. He does not show any other symptons of diabetes and suprisingly despite his sweet tooth he is not overweight.

@AnnieC I hope your husband's tests come back OK but 6.8 before and 8.3 after 2 hours is not good for a non-diabetic I'm afraid. Many doctors believe non-diabetic levels should be fasting and before meals under 5.5, one hour after meals under 7.8 and 2 hours after meals under 6.6.

Well I am thinking he is probably prediabetic I was diagnosed that with two consecutive BG levels of 6.8 and 6.9 so I started to do something about it by cutting out the starchy carbs and sugar stuff but I know it will be hard to get my husband to do that. He is almost 82 and says he should be able to have what he enjoys eating at his time of life

well I have just tested my husband's bg before and after a meal of burger, bun, chips and sweet relish

pre meal 5.2
post meal 4.7 - I made him retest as I didn't believe it and it was 5.0

He said now will you leave it alone?

I had a burger, creme fraiche and a tomato, yellow pepper and aubergine mix. pre meal 5.1 post meal 6.1.

I had to have a square of chocolate to cheer me up:)
