GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013

Hi Folks,
Just a thought I had...

So this is the headline in the news at the moment "GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013" and the PTC is to be scrapped.

So is this going to be an opertunity to ask your GP for some more expensive treatments for better control of diabetes, my thinking is that for the first year at least they are going to have to spend massive amounts of cash on treatments to keep whatever budget they have for the following year.
If GP's don't do this in the beginning then the following year then the budget is going to be far less.
So it makes sence for them to offer genuine brand treatments and not the cheaper brands of the same drug.

What I want to know is, would it be worth us asking for say an "OMNIPOD" ?

I know my 15yr old son would have one in a flash, if they were available on the NHS. But we are in Liverpool and the childrens hospital has only one child who has an OMNIPOD, and the only reason they got that is that the diabetes parent group had a fundraiser to get it.

I think it would be reasonable to ask as soon as the changover starts at your GP's surgery.

Please leave your views on this idea, even if it's not popssible for us adults, surely it's worth trying for the children with diabetes ?
 
My sister works in recruitment for schools, supplying teachers etc. They also have budgets and at the end of the fnancial year she is always busier as schools are using up their budget to maintain the same amount as the year before, so a GP doing the same would make total sense to me!

I agree that it's worth trying especially at least for the kids

Also i think it would be nice if it helped especially type 2's who struggle to pay for their own test strips as they are refused them on prescription it really makes me angry to read of pensioners that only have a small pension to live on are expected to purchase their own, which i'm sure in some cases would impair their ability to control their diabetes best they can.

Maybe you should get in line now to get your son an omnipod, and if not maybe you could findraise too?
 
Well I live in Wales so at the moment the English experiment is not happening here.

However we have already seen the privatisation of Tertiary Education by the current coalition government against the wishes of the majority. My own view is that the GP fund holding experiment is the thin end of the wedge for a gradual privatisation of Health Care by stealth in the UK. GP's are already actually private contractors although they work within the NHS and this is a huge opportunity for them to make money. Just as they did when the out of hours working was negotiated, the result they are payed more and now you struggle to get out of hours calls from a local GP cover is provided by locums.

We will I fear end up with the North American model with an underclass that cannot afford approriate care and health care insurance for a Diabetic will be extraordinarily expensive.

I could not happen here the people wont stand for it ? We better start fighting now, write to your MP express your concerns make it clear that the NHS is sacrosanct and the electorate wont stand for this, I dont recall this being mentioned prior to the election.
 
Thankfully I live in Wales.
But I feel the Conservatives will try and privatise our NHS as they 're already doing in England.
Cameron is doing in 12 months what Thatcher failed in 10 years, to destroy the welfare state.
Lets hope that everyone sees this and removes this army of toffs who have no ones interests other then the rich. Why else would the only tax cut in the plans is to get rid of the 50p tax rate.
 
I think the reforms are a very bad idea and they are not supported by the majority of hospital doctors or GPs.

The reforms open up the way to further privatization of the NHS, which in the long term will be bad news for us diabetics. You only have to look at what happens in the US where people are unable to afford their metformin or insulin because they don't earn enough to pay for private health insurance. If you think the test strip situation is bad now, wait until private companies take over.

As this GP explains, private companies are lining up to take over NHS services, because they will be able to make profits. The profits will be made by rationing care....

GPs are private providers, money they can save by providing the cheapest care will become profits to take home.

I am interested to see that Diabetes uk is 'also concerned that the planning and delivery of joined-up diabetes services could be undermined by these reforms'

What joined up services would these be then? My experience is that they are anything but joined up!
 
Hi, this is a hot topic. I have had type 1 for around 27 months and chose to be under the hospital as the GP surgery I am with is not the best. We were told on a DAFNE course that most GP's only see 1 or 2 type 1's in a medical career, so if they are in charge of a budget, how can they possibly really know what I may need? I think that most GP's will want to maximise their revenue performance and therefore it will not be good for all. The government is simply rushing through half brained ideas without taking the time to ask us, the people who will be affected. There will be some good things to come out of it no doubt, but it comes down to the GP you have and how good they are. In my case heaven help us..............................

It will be intresting to see what happens next.....the £1.4 billion cost of redundancys within the NHS will come out of the budgets allocatied from 1st April 2011. :shock:

All services will be, from 2013, be subject to GPs selecting the most profatable services working with private healthcare firms. :shock:

After dicussions with a few GP Practisces who have said the diabetic services / treatment currently offered will be left to the NHS to deliver, as there will be no profit to make. :evil:

How do i know? i work for a PCT in West London, and have been a type 1diabetic for 31 years and a double amputee, and have just been made redundant as a fire, health and safety advisor....

the future is very worrying, as expensive treatment like pumps will be left to the NHS to provide

my GP's practice is already run like your post. I must admit my PDN encourages us Dib'os to test as much as possible now :lol:
I always thought that welsh people got free meds etc. :?
The only thing that i could complain about is it took 3yr to get a mri scan which i personally feel was a large part of my diabetes :roll: :roll: :roll:

When you visit my GPs practice now , if you need any physiotherapy ,
you are Now Pushed /sent to a local private setup ,treatment paid for by the NHS ?
if you want any extras ,heat,Hydro,ect you need to pay ?


However 1 mile away is local hospital offering anyone self referral physiotherapy treatment
that i find this far superior then the private setup

So what are the GPs playing at now ???

I have tested both options I rather go to the Hospital anytime ,

how long will i have this choice ?

unlike you, i am very much in the front line AND actually know what i am talking to working with NHS diabetes specialists who very much fear for the future..... :shock:

A piece of advice might be to take your (Comment removed) and look and even see what is going on.....

but i dont think so....

I got an email from diabetes.co.uk today that mentioned this thread as a hot issue - so perhaps that's why people are choosing to post on this topic today!!

I have to say - I don't think this is necessarily a party political issue as Labour went some way to opening up the NHS toward privatisation. However the current coalition government are in the process of taking this aim much further and that is why it is a hot issue.
 
As someone else said I think much will depend upon the care you are receiving now.

I have found the introduction of the DSN's and the policy of keeping diabetics away from the gp's
over the last 4 years has led to a deterioration. The annual reviews and Nurse's reviews have been a time wasing unproductive innovation.
A few minutes with a specialist in the Diabetic dept of the hospial was worth more than 2 years of this nonsense. A casual chat with a passing dietician also was more enlighening than literally hours spent trying to ge some answers from the diabetic nurse.

This forum is probably more use than many HCP's to diabetics.

i hope that those who have received good care to date are not adversely affected.

Not so goji, we get email notifications because we are members here, these media terrorists found this thread by Googling "NHS GP's BUDGET" or some such thing they are here purely to peddle there propaganda.

THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL FORUM if you want to play who's the best politician then go to one of the 1000's of forums where these things are argued about. This is a diabetes forum here to help diabetics.

The "new" members who have posted here will probably never post here again because they are left wing extremists, probably the same ones who caused so much damage and chaos at the otherwise peaceful TUC march over the weekend. In my book left wing extremists are no better than right wing extremists and the lot of them should be locked up out of our way for a very long time indeed.

I apologise unconditionally to any of the first time posters who are genuine diabetics and just expressing an opinion but I just dont think they are.

Finding myself Now at the lower end of the now Con-Dems Social Scale

I can not help feeling that ,I could easily be driven to take some form of direct Action NOW :evil:
