Graham sugar levels

Grind

Newbie
Hi, I am type 2. When I wake up in the mornings I test myself and usually I have a reading from my Accucheck device of
around 8 - 10 or even 11. Is this normal? I started this morning with 8.5 and after breakfast(a bowl of cereal - shreddies mixed with Crunchy nut my reading was 12.5. Should I be worried? After the usual 2 hrs My reading drops to between 4.5 - 5.9 on the odd occasion it rises to about 6.7ish.

morning @Grind I am always in the 8's in the mornings... but I (personally) wouldn't be having Shreddies or Crunchy Nut for my breakfast - Breakfast Cereals are not good (for me) and its certainly not surprising (to me) that your readings went up to 12.5

These are the levels recommended by NICE and the NHS.

so you can see that your levels are high in comparison.
I'm afraid that if I ate breakfast cereal of any sort my levels would also be high, so I don't eat them. Keep using your meter to test out all your foods and eliminate (or seriously reduce) any that make you rise above 2mmol/l (preferably less than that). The lower the rise, the better.

Tks Paul your answer has really helped get my levels in perspective. My Dr and the nurses I see have all expressed their happiness with my sugar levels when I go for my yearly assessment. However I was concerned with them myself. I will cut out the cereal. What do you imbibe in the mornings?

@Grind For my breakfast I am usually having something protein based - Eggs or Smoked Salmon or Turkey Rashers sometimes I might just have some Yogurt and Blueberries.

The thing is, our Fasting Blood Sugars can vary for all sorts of reasons, I just know from my monitoring that my trend is to be in the 8's in the mornings - I would certainly hope to reduce that to 7's and 6's as I get my overall health in better shape. Because 8's are too high - but I'm sure someone who has 10's or more in the morning would love to have an 8

You need to find what works for you and as @Bluetit1802 has stated, you need to use your meter and aim to be within the recommended target.

And as a T2 one of the first things we soon learn is that Breakfast Cereal is actually one of the worst things any of us can eat.

Breakfasts are difficult for many of us because we are stuck with a protein or/and fat meal if we want to stay lowish all morning. Those with insulin resistance often find that carbs at breakfast will spike much higher than the same meal would at evening meal time because the IR improves a bit as the day progresses. I used to have a full fat yogurt and one or two berries but had to shift that meal to later in the day. I now have a soft boiled egg with a cup of tea or coffee and cream.
