Hello,

My name is Paul, and I am a diabetic, dx~ed 29.1.2009, type 1, or lada 1.5, though 1.5 doesn´t exist as a term here, nor does low carbing.

Left Uk three years ago, and bought a farm in the middle of Portugal, vines and olives mostly.. which I share with 5 dogs, 3 cats, chickens, ducks and a sheep, my eco lawn mower.

The health care system here is well meaning but a bit behind the times in terms of diabetes treatment, but after 3 horrible months on mixtard, which was not good, felt it controlled me, rather than me, it. Finally got to see an endochrinologist, dumped 3 months of computer graphs, think like a pancreas, and using insulin on the table, and a a list of what i wanted. Doctors are revered here, and it is not like patients to be so pro active.

Am now on lantus and novorapid, and life is so much easier, last HA1c was 7.3, down from 13.2 on DX, but i was still getting to grips with it all. Next will be better. While on mixtard, I basically couldnt do any exercise as i was low carbing to deal with it, and had my first full on hypo 40 feet up an olive tree, which was a pretty surreal experience.

Anyway, have enjoyed reading the forum, helped enormously when first diagnosed, and good to feel less alone.

Hi Paul.
Welcome to the forum.

Have a good look around and when you are ready ask anything you wish. We will try to give answers.

Wouldn't mind being in Portugal. Right now it's 16 deg C and raining in the West Mids. Brrrr !!
