Guar gum alternative

I've been trying low carb pizza base recipes, and haven't yet found one that's quite right. WhitbyJet gave me a great one but it involved guar gum, and having done a google search, it seems to cost around £10 for a pack. This seems a bit steep, and I was wondering what it does & whether I could substitute anything else for it? I have absolutely no idea what it is or what it's purpose is!!

I use xanthan gum - less than £2 for 100 g - lasts ages. Tescos or Health stores.

I recall many years ago my diabetic doctor prescribing me this stuff as a drink to have before meals to help level out my sugar levels. It was horrible, like thick wall paper paste, I used to vomit when trying to drink it. Forgot all about it till I seen the name of it on here. Brings me back to the bad old days and another reason I ended up turning my back on attending appointments for many years. :silent:
