Hello,

I haven't posted on here in a while but anyway I am going to the gym tonight for the first time....but I am not too sure if I should be because of my sciatic....I know many of you are probably going to say that it will help, but I am worried it won't because not even walking helps it, it just makes it work and I can just about straighten it so I was wondering does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do at the gym?!

Thank you

Nicola x

Maybe it's worth asking one of the trainers.
Perhaps there is some stretching exercises that could help.

Hi Nicola,
I have recently been seeing a chiropractor for sciatica. When I asked whether I should attend my exercise class in the afternoon (after my morning appointment) his answer was a definite "Yes". He just advised me to stop any exercise if it was hurting. I went along and it was fine.

However, my sciatica is not painful during the day when I am standing or walking, but becomes so when I sit for long periods. At night I find it really difficult to get comfortable in bed, as no position seems to alleviate the pain. If I do manage to get to sleep, I usually wake after about 4 hours and often get up because I can't get comfortable.

After 3 visits to the chiropractor, I haven't noticed much improvement, though he seems very professional. He suggested I take magnesium to help relax muscles and I have just started on that. If I don't improve soon, I will try an seeing an osteopath.

Good luck with your exercising. I can really relate to the frustrations of not being able to " fix" sciatica and I have also wondered if it is related to having diabetes (ie. nerve pain), or maybe just my age, which is 68.

I am Type 2: on 500mg x 2 daily.

Let us know how you get on with your gym work.

A chiropractor did wonders for me. I had problems with my sacro illeac joint (same joint as often affects the sciatic nerve).

I think Chiros and osteopaths are fairly interchangeable (although I am sure they don't think so)

Definitely worth thinking about. I paid £45 for a single appt which cut my pain by 90%. The other 10% of pain cleared up slowly over the next 3 months. Worth every penny. Although, of course we, and our sacro illeac joints are all unique!

I didnt end up going gym in the end because I know it would be no hope! I can just about walk without being in too much pain nothing I do works and I am on no painkillers either and to make matters worse I am only 19 :(

I am waiting for physio still and waiting for my MRI results too which I do not get until the end of July :( x
