my mum has type 2 diabetes and also early onset alzeihmers. the diabetes is being controled with tablets and insulin.

she had to go to hospital las sunday and was nil by mouth (no explanation as they saw a p.e.g. tube in her tummy and assumed she could not eat). during 4 days of not eating she had no insulin and when she began eating and fed through p.e.g she also had no insulin given to her.

mum is only 56 but alzeihmers has effected her communication skills so she couldnt bring it to their attention it was left for me to do.

on returning to her care home 24hrs later she developed h.o.n.k and was semi concious and rushed back to hospital and put on floating scale insulin.

can any experts advise if the stopping the insulin in hospital and her being restarted at her care home with a normal diet has caused h.o.n.k?

i need answers and im not getting them at hospital.

thanks

h.o.n.k. for the uninitiated (including me !) stands for
Hyperosmolar nonketotic coma (HONK)

Also known as Diabetic hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome, per

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... 000304.htm

where :

Risk factors include:

A stressful event such as infection, heart attack, stroke, or recent surgery
Congestive heart failure
Impaired thirst
Limited access to water (especially in patients with dementia or who are bedbound)
Older age
Poor kidney function
Poor management of diabetes -- not following the treatment plan as directed
Stopping insulin or other medications that lower glucose levels

I don't know the answer to your question yasmina, but it's obviously possible.
Hope you find an answer,

Geoff

Dear Yasmina what an awful thing for your mum to go through, I'm so sorry for you both. That is shocking, the lack of care, by not giving your mum any Insulin is outrageous. I hope you get answers to this terrible situation, please try and find out what or what didn't happen, dont give up as they will not give up information freely, so you will have to assert yourself with lots of questions to get to the bottom of what happened, dont let them fob you off. Your poor, poor mum and you, she is only 2 years older than me :(

With kind regards and very good wishes to your both. RRB Could you let us know how she is getting on and if there is any progress?

thank you geoff and robin redbreast.

my mums care has been disgusting and i for one think the lack of care during a totally unrelated hospital visit resulted in her returning with a major problem in her diabetes.

it saddens me that im the one pointing errors out to staff on a daily basis, just yesterday her arm was swollen where the insulin was being pumped in even though a dr was taking blood from the same arm! its known as tissuing and caused by insulin going in skin and not blood.

i will keep you all updated. be carefull in hospital because if you can not talk to the staff you may be neglected :(
