Hi all,

I suffer from low iron levels from time to time and recently had bloods done that showed a mmol/mol of 51 and then 49 a month apart. I've now been told I need to see the diabetes clinic as the result 'confirms type 2 diabetes'. I'm very surprised by this, possibly due to my ignorance, as I've got no family history of it, never been overweight, eat really well and am very active. Also, the doctor I was seeing about my iron issues mentioned that low iron can affect hba1c results (unfortunately he has now retired). Has anyone else got a similar profile? Should I be expecting the clinic to test for type 1 antibodies?

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi @RachelG. and welcome to the dcuk forums.

Oops not sure whether that link works... ( on my phone) but low iron may indeed cause falsely elevated hba1c readings. You coukd always ask for a fructosamine test which Is an alternative glucose checker...

Good luck, whether or not the hba1c is accurate.
