Hi All. Currently city breaking in Edinburgh. Going for dinner soon.. is haggis a nono? Or a standard 'safe' food if I get my carb count roughly right? Thanks all

It's on carbs and cals so you could guess carbs..

Hi, lve just looked in my carbs and calories book,it gives haggis as 40 carbs for a 210g portion.Haggis has oats and barley in the mixture it can have various ingredients and so not so good for me as a type 2.:(...................I just have a small portion as a treat!Have a great weekend.Edinburgh is a great city and enjoy your haggis.

Welcome to my city, hen!

Sure, give the haggis a go - about 20% carb, but low GI oatmeal tempered by all the fat in it, so work it out from there - hopefully you'll get one of the MacSween numbers: you'd think you were in India with the number of spices they've got in those dudes. Haggis usually comes with "neeps" which is boiled turnip, so no carbs worth worrying about there, and "tatties" which is potato mash, so you'll have to keep your wits about you there.

If I may suggest, there's a lot of places do Stornoway black pudding, with scallops, better than steak if they do it right.

If you want to low carb it a bit, Ondine on George IV Bridge does almost Michelin starred quality seafood, Outsider on the bridge itself is good too, Fishers on Thistle Street, not quite M but getting there, Bon Vivant just cross the road is quality stuff too.

Passorn on Hanover Street - if you can cope with a bit of white rice, it's a wonderfully sophisticated Thai place.

Or, if you're splashing out on a weekend break, try 21212 on Royal Terrace - tiny portions, massive theatre!

Anyway, after the food, adjourn to the pub: maybe Tigerlily bling on George Street suits you; if not, the Black Cat round in Rose Street will do you a very nice and rare Edradour whisky along with a couple of hundred others, and a lovely barmaid called Jane, and then the sheer architecture, in different ways of the Dome, East end of George Street, or the Voodoo Rooms - near the Dome but ask for directions: young crowd and quite possibly the best ceiling on the planet!

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone!

I didn't brave it the first night as the only option was a haggis tower (with the mash/turnips included) so I went with seabass and extra veg instead of potatoes (see photo). I was a little worried as he veg was actually peas (not always a good one for me!). However pre meal = 5.4 and 2 hours after = 7.4 so not too bad seeing as I also had a glass of wine!

Today I ordered a side of haggis (see photo) with my lunch and let everyone else eat the mash!

Talking of a dram... we went to the Whiski Rooms and tried 'a flight' with 4 different whiskys to try (see photo). I didn't take any bolus but still suffered in the night with some continuous hypos. Not sure the whisky was the only cause bet hey ho, it was my birthday so thought it was worth a try.

I've had a great time in Edinburgh. Also did my good deed for the day and gave away my glucose tabs to a fellow diabetic lady who was walking up to Arthur's Seat and was all out of hypo supplies!

As an Edinburgh resident, @tiredoftrying2017 , I do apologise for the lousy weather you had here over the last few days (it's sometimes sunny here)!

Still, glad to see you tried the haggis, although you're being diplomatically coy on whether you liked it or not!

Get yerself back here some day and test those carb counting skills against cullen skink (a seafood chowder), and cranachan (toasted oats, raspberries, cream and honey)!

Slainte!

I put whisky in my cranachin.

Aah, well, Diakat, you're a true Scotsman/woman/person! Next time they're doing your a1c, slip them a fiver, see if they'll do some genome testing - you might have some Celtic blood in you!

That Aberlour 10 was an inspired choice :-)

Hahaa! I thought the weather was pretty good if a little chilly! No rain and nothing got in the way of us doing anything. I thought the haggis was delicious! Thanks for the recommendations

Good to know that, Diakat! We Celts seem to pop up everywhere - I flew into Corfu once, got the hydrofoil to Saranda in Albania, turned up at a hostel, was practising my Albanian for, "I would like a room for three nights, please", then the girl who answered the door and owned/ran the place says, **** that, I'm Irish, come away in, there's your bed, nice to have another Celt on board, lets go for a beer!
