HAIR LOSS N a DIABETIC

I certainly seemed to be loosing a lot of hair before diagnosis. Every time I combed it, it came out in handfuls.
Whether it was because of the high levels or because the lack insulin and fuel to the cells caused the body to shut down unnecessary functions, I don't know.
I'm pleased to say, it's fine now.
 
It seems to be a fairly common complaint, judging by the number of threads that come up in the Similar Topics area underneath this thread
 

Lack of insulin and fuel to the cells sounds like a very likely cause. It makes sense to me.
 
On our skins except palms and soles hair can grow but many of hair are virtually invisible. A protein named Keratin is in the formation of hair and it produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of skin. As follicles produced new hair cells, old cells are being pushed out through the surface of the skin at the rate of about 6” a year. Diabetes can have can have adverse effects on our body, including hair loss and hair thinning. Don’t be worried because hair loss as a result of diabetes can be controlled and treated with the FDA-approved and clinically proven treatments for hair loss. According the Leonora, Diabetes mainly causes temporary hair loss and this problem should correct itself once the hormones are functioning properly again following diabetic treatment. Hair loss could be because of problem with thyroid.
 
Thanks for all your comments. I was recently diagnosed and dropped quite a few kilo before being diagnosed, then put on quite a few kilo in the short time after. I've been loosing quite a bit of hair in the last two weeks and assumed it might be the weight loss. Guess I'll need to get checked out for thyroid too.
 
Hi I was having my hair cut a few years ago & my hairdresser said that injecting insulin can effect the condition of hair I've got type 1 & had it for nearly 24years I've definitely noticed a change to my hair the hairdresser said I should speak to my GP or diabetes consultant to enquire if I could be referred to a specialist unfortunately my GP at the time was not helpful but I've now got a new GP & diabetes consultant & I'm definitely going to chase this issue I'm sure if it effects how you feel about yourself & your confidence your GP &/or diabetic clinic will do their best to help! I'm diabetic as a result of insulin resistance caused by PCOS. PCOS caused me to gain 3st in weight over a few months and lose my hair. It became finer and finer over a few years leaving my head like a bald man. If you're losing hair and diabetic check out if you have other symptoms of PCOS. It commonly has infertility, hair loss, hair gain on face and body, inability to lose weight, irregular periods etc as other symptoms including developing diabetes
 


I know what your going through I have been Diabetic for about five years now, certain medications they put you on seem too cause other problems too, recently I have been put onto Victoza and of course Metformin and its been a revelation before my hair was thinning and falling out at a alarming rate like you my hair was thick and plentiful, I might add since I've changed there has been a great improvement my hair has stopped falling out , the medication I stopped taking were Sitagliptin Pioglitazone these Meds caused other problems like weight gain joint pains leg problems and a general feeling of being unwell.
 
I started to loose my hair I have always had very thick hair and was devastated when it fell out in handfuls. When I first mentioned it my GP said if I find a cure let him know, but on a later visit I saw a student GP and my own GP went through reasons I may be loosing hair. Incidentally I lost all my body hair which was why he became interested again (my fault I didn't tell him the first time). I have Lupus and hair lose is one of its symptoms but I had not had it before. The question of Statins came up and we tried a change from Simvastatin to Atorvastatin. It has seemed to work, so perhaps you just need to try different ones till you find one that works. I had a minor stroke 3 weeks ago so will not stop taking one.

Yes - it 'is' best to see and discuss with your own doctor .

When I was diagnosed I was automatically put on statins even though my cholesterol wasn't extremely high (prob because of my age... I just turned 40). I too started to get a lot of hair loss and also a rash on my legs and feeling a bit nauseous. I stopped taking the statins and now rash is gone, don't feel nauseous and no more hair loss. I haven't told the dr I stopped taken them and they haven't noticed I stopped getting my prescription. Naughty I know and am expecting a ticking off when I tell him

i have been on thyroxine for 8 years and have had some hair loss since i started, but i have been diagnosed type 1 since october and now only have half the hair i had before. i colour my hair (being a certain age i need to lol) and my brush is full of hair and even my bedroom floor had hair all ova it, when i dry it with the towel lots falls out too. im getting worried tho like I said because this has only gotten worse since october.

Re: tests for thyroid function. My cousin in US advised me to stop taking thyroid meds for 48 hours prior to test. I did this for my last test and now have a thyroid review in 2 months, something I've been trying to get for some years.
 
my hair is a lot thinner since being diabetic I was told when I went on an expert cause that you do lose hair from this and the medication
 
I think you must recheck your Toroid , hemoglobin and Diabetes Level. After this you would consult a good hair doctor who can give you the best solution for it.
