Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi All,
I was diagnosed type 2 in 2005,I weighed over 18 stone,at first I managed by diet alone, but was soon put on Metformin,Over the years I have lost a lot of weight, and now weigh 11 stone,my diabetic nurse was so pleased with all my tests etc.that she has taken me off my Metformin,Good you might say? Well. since stopping the Metformin, the hair on my legs/arms has disapeared, and my eyebrows are so sparse I can hardly see them,I take Levothyroxin,Can anyone please give me a reason for this hair loss?

You might want to get your thyroidlevels checked again. Sounds more like your levothyroxine dosage needs to be adjusted than a diabetes problem. Especially the eyebrows are an indicator, and you did say you lost a substantial amount of weight... Good luck!

How long have you not been on metformin?
In my experience I get the opposite, no metformin I'm hairier due to PCOS. Although I'm not 11st I'm nearly double that.
It could be that your insulin, or lack of it would cause no hair for females.
Maybe some type1s would clarify that for you.??
I'll ask @donnellysdogs by tagging here.

Unbalanced hormones involved in thyroid health is connected to hair loss thou.
When was your tsh last tested???

I was suffering from hair thinning/loss and asked for blood tests which is when I was diagnosed with type 2. From what I understand it is a symptom of diabetes but not sure re the drugs. Mine seems to have slowed since I’ve got my BG under control a bit. I can’t comment on legs as I use IPL and it has gone anyway.
If you decide to get your thyroid checked, the usual NHS test is pretty pointless as the only check one level and you need three checks. Can’t remember offhand what they are called but nearly all nhs thyroid checks come back ok due to this. Learnt from a recent hormone course by an expert.

Thanks for your replies,I think I will go back to my GP,as you say all thyroid tests always come back normal, when you know yourself they are not,I get tired very quickly, and can drop off without knowing,My doctor says "its age" well,I know that at nearly 72 its a possibility, but I believe my thyroid tablets need tweeking,Ive been on the same dose for years,
