hi all my 12 yr old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 3 weeks ago, after sucessfully gradually getting her levels under control, have now found her hair is thin and is coming out at an alarming rate, i feel so sorry for her as she is just begining to get used to her routine now she has this to contend with , am contacting my dn tomorrow but any ideas on what maybe causing this in the meantime will be gratefully recieved

It might just be stress but without alarming you I have met a young person with Type 1 that also developed Alapecia (sp?). Your child is also at a hormonal age so it might just be puberty also. I know heaps of my hair feel out after pregnancy because of the hormones. Hopefully your Dn or GP can help.

Hiya I am extremely new here - first post lol.

My son was diagosed this week with type 1 after being rushed to hospital with a blood sugar of 28. anyway, have you thought to have her thyroid checked? My son has alopecia totalis resultig from alot of auto-immune problems - diabetes being just one of them.

HTH

Hi There Crystal

So sorry you had to join the club. My 12 yr old was diagnosed just before Christmas and we went through the same thing when he was first put onto insulin - the shower trap was blocked every time he washed his hair poor duck. From what we were told by our DSN this is a very common side-effect from commencing the insulin regime ( and what rotten timing for yr/my child). 4 months on and it seems to have stopped coming out at an alarming rate and with some signs of regrowth (minimal as yet). We were told it should re-grow - and certainly my mum (yup diabetics in three generations now) has got all hers back!

All the best to you & yours :D
