Half unit pens?

Hi all,

Sure I have read somewhere that insulin pens can be used to deliver half a unit.

Wondered what their availability is like in the UK for delivering novorapid, or is it more likely a doctor would just advise me to consider a pump if looking for that level of control?

My ratio is 0.5u to 10g carb at lunch time, which I'm told is unusual but not unheard of. While insulin sensitivity is generally a good thing, this does makes correcting at lunch time if required quite awkward because I'm so blinkin' insulin sensitive at that point!

The alternative is just to eat 10g carb when doing a 1u correction at lunch time I suspect.

Have already done some Levemir BI testing by doing a few non-carb meals at lunch (in case the BI was knocking my ratio off) and my BGs were holding beautifully...

You'd be looking for a Novopen Echo for delivering half units of NovoRapid. Your GP should be able to prescribe one for you. Pumps are a little more difficult to come by.

Thanks Robert,

I'm aware pumps are costly, had no idea about the half unit pens. Doesn't sound like the pens are too hard to come by which is good news.

I'd rather inject than use a pump anyway to be honest!

Which pen are you using at the moment? If it's the FlexPen then you'd need to get your NovoRapid in cartridges for the NovoPen Echo.

I use one that takes NovoRapid in cartridges. Can't remember the name of it, my nurse called it the "kiddy pen" which is an indication of how old it is!

Still works though. Doesn't have the tendency to jam which the newer refillable ones seem to.

hi
