Has anyone tried a raw food diet?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a heavy duty blender or juicer to make green smoothies and green juices and have read that people who've gone raw have had good results with their diabetes. Has anyone any experience of this? At the moment I would say I'm just 30-40% raw and I eat steamed veg too.

Today my fasting blood sugar was 6.1, and after eating some natural yoghurt and a red pepper (I'd run out of apples!) it went up to 7.2. I take 2000mg Metformin.

I simply don't fancy an all raw diet. I eat quite a lot of meat and like it cooked. i do eat a LOT of raw veggies too. The thing that i believe keeps my Bg down [current meter average is 4.8] is keeping those cqarbs DOWN LOW

I'm with you there. When on a solid food diet I like things cooked. I do love salad, so eat quite a bit of that, but no, I don't think a raw food diet is for me either.

I can understand that point of view - but I'm already taking 2000mg of Metformin and my blood sugars still aren't coming down as much as I would like. If it means avoiding unhealthy spikes and more drugs, I'm willing to consider it.

I have seen this on the telly, and the people who followed an all raw diet looked FIT! I am fine with the idea of raw veg, and obviously fruit, I think I could easily eat raw beef as I like rare steak, but I am not so sure about the rest of it. If you do try it, please let me know how it goes, and what recipes you do. I would rather do raw than the Newcastle Diet

I am doing the Newcastle diet now (pokes tongue out at Jeanne  ) so am a person who will support anything others want to try. I have had oodles of support for the ND and I will support anyone who wants to try a different approach, because I see it as someone really trying to do all they can to get tight control. My comment was just that it wasn't for me, but there again if you show it works, I am likely to give it a go in the future, as I am a person who will do/try just about anything to control this **** condition.

Raw meat - yuk!!

Breakfast of raw egg, raw bacon ,raw sausage (low carb) Main raw lamb, raw celeriac, raw gravy
Dont think so

I'd be happy with the raw Veggies though because I like them that way a lot of the time and if cooked I like them very 'Al Dente'

Perhaps I should have clarified, that I didn't mean raw meat! I meant mostly raw veggie or vegan - perhaps occasionally having some cooked meat if overcome by cravings.

People are just teasing apple. I think it's fair to say we all knew what you meant. You will get used to us, few threads stay absolutely on topic. :D

Thanks Defren - I'd also like to know more about the Newcastle Diet which I see you're trying.

C'mon Def! Steak Tartare sounds yummie!!

As a kid, I insisted on ordering this is a restaurant once. My parents did their best to dissuade me but, being me, I didn't listen. They extracted a promise from me that I would eat every scrap as it was very expensive. It duly arrived, a red nest topped with a raw egg and chopped parsley...... :***: I must have gone fairly green because my very strict Dad relented and let me order fish'n'chips! My mother asked for a doggy bag and our cats had a gourmet meal!

So, thirty five years later, after that experience, no a raw food diet is not for me. Our present weather isn't doing much to encourage me - we're back to hearty warming stew weather!

I do like smoothies though. Pre-diagnosis, a smoothy made in my kitchen would have been whatever fruit was going soft, a pot of yoghurt, fruit juice and ice. Nowadays I hate to think what that would do to MH's BG levels.

I know someone who used to eat raw bacon and raw sausage. I used to think she was potty (probably still do, if I am honest)

I'm just picturing you at that restaurant all those years ago when the waiter arrived with that little Gem of a dish!!
The nearest I've got to that dish is seeing Marco Pierre White prepare it at his Gastro pub on one of his TV shows and then him having one of his tantrums at one of his staff who questioned whether this was a step too far!! I was eating one of my Homemade steak burgers at the time and the 'Tartare' just reminded me of the raw Patty mix I had made earlier complete with raw egg for binding!! I agree on the smoothies too-would spike me through the roof these days but used to love em'!!

They seem to sell a lot of steak tartare in our local Flunch (fastish food restaurant at supermarket). I looked up a few recipes on google France, strangely enough they almost all include sauce de Worcester. (very French that!) I wouldn't eat it from there, but would eat it in a better restaurant.
I really like carpaccio de boeuf: very thin slices of raw beef served with oil/lemon, herbs and shavings of parmesan, and similarly thin slices of raw salmon with lemon and oil.
I eat lots of salad but no I l wouldn't go on a raw food diet; I think it's actually very difficult to get a lot of fuel from raw food unless it's very heavilly processed (chopping, juicing etc).
One study found that women on a raw food vegan diet were underweight and a large number of the women suffered from amenorrhea (lack of periods). That doesn't suggest a healthy diet.
