the last time I was on here, I read a rather sad post by a long term member giving his reasons for leaving
I come back a few days later and the same thread is now talking about sexual abuse and whether late disclosures are credible or not - how the heck that happened bemuses me
I'm coming at this having spent my working life in childrens social care and mental health services and while not a survivor myself, I am 100% certain all the survivors I worked with would be very hurt and, if they felt strong enough, angry / offended by the implication
Sexual abuse is not a matter of the odd wolf whistle of bum grab - it is an abuse of power, usually accompanied by grooming followed by threats and often violence which can be extreme - lets not be coy - think about the singer recently convicted for multiple rapes of chidren and babies. Being able to tell anyone what has happened takes a great deal of courage, time and support

This is not a "Diabetes Discussion", perhaps it should be moved to "General Chat" @Brunneria @Administrator

From my observations threads always wobble off the topic if they go on for too long. I once belonged to a site where every thread ended up discussing sex, religion or football. When I mentioned this fact I was asked what team I supported. Very funny.

This site seems no different.

It is a follow up to a post in a thread on diabetes discussions that has gone very inappropriately off topic so I think it should absolutely stay in the same area of the forum

When threads go off topic, as many do, the correct procedure is to hit the report button so the Mods can sort it, if appropriate. Unless the report button is hit and a Mod steps in, the thread will continue to go off topic. This has always happened, on every forum I have been involved with.

@Bluetit1802 exactly. If I find that there's a thread that is drifting I simply stop to follow it. If there's a problematic user, I'll put in the ignore list.
Maybe it's because I've seen these behaviour back in BBS and USENET times, but I am not saying that DCUK is losing the plot.

In YOUR view it has gone very inappropriately off topic.
This is a diabetes forum and i very much doubt thay anyone would think the validity of sexual abuse disclosures has anything to do with diabetes, unless of course becoming an abuser or a victim is some kind of as yet undiscovered complication of the disease!

I do

i doubt many people would think the validity of sexual abuse disclosures has anything to do with diabetes, unless becoming an abuser or a victim is some kind of as yet undiscovered complication of the disease!

But did you report it?

I did wonder at the time when I saw the first mention of it and could not understand how it related to the thread in question at all... and then there were one or two follow ups that seemed to be way more "considered" on that particular subject, which I know very little about.. and decided that that thread had run it's course and would not be following it.

and in answer to the OP's question, No, there are loads of new threads that are just as valid as ever.....

@badcat - Having just arrived on forum, I have not yet read the thread allude to here, however, I will try to find it now. Unfortunately, the style of your thread here isn't overly helpful in identifying your specific concerns.

It is a fact of this forum that the Moderators are volunteers and thereby give as much or as little of their time and energy as they can at any given time. Utilising the Report button allows users to report content/members/language or whatever that causes them concern. If no Mod is around at that time, an alert is displayed for all Mods to be picked up as and when one becomes available.

One one of other point, I think it worthwhile to remind ourselves of the function of the Diabetes Discussions area. The following snippet shows the sub-forum description:

If the post has upset you why didn't you report it.
I think we are being encouraged to do that if the post is offensive. Was it offensive?
Last time I was on the thread it said the french have made the wolf whistle illegal. Which some posters deemed it extreme. Which is what the thread has turned into. A discussion about how somethings can be portrayed as extreme. Extreme upset feelings the OP has expressed. Not me saying, just the discussion which followed after such a mixed bag of opinions was posted.
A discussion which highlights how easily some posts are getting misconstrued, maybe?

No, not losing the plot at all. Its just in the nature of forums that some threads travel about a bit. Just like a conversation face to face, sometimes people like to discuss other things.
If you find it inappropriate then please report it. I have reported a couple of threads because they seemed to be advertising and the mods were excellent.

If you just dont like the way the thread has " meandered" then just dont follow it.

On the whole I find this forum fantastic, helpful, friendly and informative. We are all different, but I am sorry that you dont find it as helpful as I do.

But do you hit the report button as well?
I'll use this only on blatant problems, that luckily I've nevere encountered here. It's true that there there are some members that I put in ignore list, because I found them rude, but because it's a really subjective matter I think it's better to use the ignore.

I used the report function the other day because there was a new member who needed help and I don't know how to tag mods so I reported and asked for their help for this person.

If I use the ignore button does it also remove that persons comments when others quote them?

To tag a mod, just tag as normal, with an @ plus the mod's name. eg @mod's name.
