Hi, I'm Steve, type 1 for approx 44 years , recently I was admitted to hospital with pneumonia, now 4 weeks later I'm left with a chest infection which on antibiotics and Steroids , my BS levels have risen to about the 20s ( old money ) each night since , just about tripling my dose of fast acting to get them to about 9 , normally excellent control , anybody had similar probs, how do I deal with it , due to return to work next week ? Thanks

Hi Steve,
Having a nasty bout of pnemiona myself, it took me a considerably long time to recover, you say four weeks later you still have a chest infection, and currently taking antibiotics and steroids, steroids are dreadful for pushing sugars levels high and of course having any infection will push them up too, it's like a double whammy isn't it...I wouldn't think your well enough yet to go back to work with a current infection of course I don't know your employment, but still feel even on light duties will make you feel worse at present...I wasn't working when I had mine but it took it out of me doing light household chores...you must think of your health foremost and I know how pneumonia effects you...I would also advise you to ask your gp for another xray as it can flare up again so quickly...I feel when your infection free of those nasty steroids and antibiotics your bs will come down nicely and manageable as they were before. Hooe that helps a little...wishing you well.

Hi
steroids will higher your bloods, i had a steroid injection and for 10 days after i was in the 20s and no amount of insulin would take them down, also the infection you have will also higher bloods, keep an eye on your ketones and hope u get well soon

If your on basal/bolus then follow the DAFNE Sick Day Rules to adjust your insulin to your rising bg levels, there's a good explanation in the following if your unsure what to do:

However if things continue and you struggle to control your bg levels then you should get in touch with your diabetes team asap.

Hello and welcome Steve.
Sorry you havent been well, thing will settle when you get better.
