hi i been battling my readings since i was diagnosed and roughly 9-10 in morning and 11-13 after meals on my one metformin tablet

last week saw diabetic nurse who agreed me to increase to 2 metformin a day (500mg tablet)

i been ill for over a week with broncjitis type illness( just got antibiotics thursday) as it not going away but today i felt dreadful i so thirsty throat dry sleepyiness so i tested and my sugars hovering a round 15

is this ok occasionally? as i cant lower it unless i ask for more meds.i trying with the diet lost a stone and will keep trying to lose more.lowered my carbs but my cholesterol went up to 5.9 so need to lower more fats too

i have found them very slow to act to help me lower my readings.been over 6months now at this level although 15 is even higher but maybe the illness

i suffer from m.e/cfs and am housebound sometimes bedbound so i cant do any exercise at all.i struggle to read large amount of texts and am hoping my daughter can help wade through the site for more info for me.trouble is i been ill in bed a lot lately and havent managed to read much info for a while..i will keep coming back though as this site is really helpful thank you

infections do put blood glucose up, but your numbers are a bit high
How much carb are you eating?
I currently have a cold and my numbers are trying to creep up. I'm being extra vigilant on carbs and keeping the lid on.
Metformin alone cannot bring your Bg down more than about 2 even on maximum dose. Controlling your carbs can do more than that.

thanks for reply hanadr

im still geting used to this carb thing..nurse told me to eat whatever and not worry at all.just stay healthy less fats etc.trying get my head around differnt advice ive been given

but i have been trying eat less carbs already.i on a low budget and finding trying buy right foods even harder now.trying vut out my bread which has been a major part of my diet as regular tummy filler makes fod go further etc..trying stop it now and just go hungryier until sugars go down

if the metformin dont lower more than by 2 i dont know why my doc thought it would go right down with just one tablet..im so confused.beginning to think my care team dont actually care now

2 points for you
"Eat plenty of starchy carbs and less fat" is the usual advice. It's WRONG! They won't admit they made a mistake, although Diabetes Uk are now modifying their advice [in the pipeline and not published yet]
Fat metabolism has Zero effect on blood glucose, whereas starches convert 100% to glucose.
It's even been shown conclusively that low carb diets help you to lose weight more effectively than low fat diets.
If you have any doubts, I recommend you try the lowered carb approach and see if it works for you[I predict it will. If you get hungry, increase your fats]

Second point:
Metformin is a very safe medicine, but it does have a tendency to cause digestive upsets[hence its nickname "Metfartin"]
That is why they tend to introduce it gradually. They know it won't bring numbers down fast or far.
However tightly controlled carbs can and does. Try it and keep a food diary to help you see what is working best for you.
Extra point
although high nutritional quality foods can be expensive, you can save by cutting out the empty calories, in cakes, biscuits, sweets, crisps etc. Better eat less good food than loads of rubbish. Cooking from raw ingredients is the economical way to do it.
Good luck!
