Okay, some may be aware theough my other posts. I was on Lantus, then i believe i missed a dose had a massive headache, which appeared to stay, eventualy changed my insulin to levemir as soon as i injected the headache went, brill up until this saterday when i forgot my levemir, again a massive headache, now its still there but not such abrupt or painful just there!!

what shal i do? change to a old long acting? any one else suffered the same?

I had thought levemir was the answer, BGs are what they normaly are and dont appear to be related to headache.

thanks for any help

Hi Ewan
I've read of people suffering headaches while on Lantus Lantus, although I never did. I'm sure I've mentioned(just a few times:lol: ) that I had other problems with Lantus  .
You should do a google search for "headache" and Levemir and see if other people re have reported a connection. Otherwise contact the IDDT and see what they have to say. Bear in mind that analogue insulin side-effects can often take some time to show. What rapid acting insulin are you on?
It's entirely possible that you are just not suited to analogue insulins, we're a growing bunch. Why not ask your doc about changing to animal insulin for a trial period and see if the problem goes.
What has your doc suggested re- the headache?
Jus :)

thanks Janabelle

the levamir is much better than lantus, a lot of other negative things have gone.

its the fact that if i miss a dose BANG massive headache to the front of the head, the fact that i took my nova rapid did'nt seem to make a differance, though lter my bloods did go high 19 but soon brought down with NR and i took levamir at miday instead of 0700 and 10 units instead of 28, then returned to normal the next day. though headache still lingers.

just dont know why i get it when i miss a dose?

I get headaches with high blood sugars sometimes (or it could be the tiredness caused by high blood sugars causes headaches, rather than it being a direct link), maybe it is something similar with you?

Also, do you get the headache before or after you have realised you have missed a dose? It could be worry about having missed a dose, headaches can be caused by all sorts of things stress, worry etc, I have terrible headaches during and after blood tests sometimes, just because of worry/panic about the needles.

hi hlw,

no, no lik to bgs, these headaches start with very acute pain, extreamly severe, i then take some levamir and they lessen but remain as a normal headache, the acute bit is like a knife going into my forhead.

now just nagging

thanks for your thoughts

Hi Ewan,

Is the acute pain over one eye? Have you been checked for migraines? My migraines are not connected with my diabetes, but they sound very much like what you're describing. Migraine can have many triggers - with me, I generally have to have at least two triggers present for a migraine to develop, but they always start and finish with a dull headache. if you suffer from migraines you'd understand the difference between the post-migraine headache and the migraine itself, althoguh it's a bit hard to explain! I've no idea whether insulin (or lack of it) could trigger migraine, though.

As a migraine sufferer this sounds extremely familiar. Have you had any of these headaches at any other time? It could be unrelated to you forgetting a dose. It might be a good idea to see your GP. Sudden severe headaches should always be checked out. Don't just assume they're migraines or missed doses.

thanks all, these acute attacks have only happend after missing a long acting dose 'i believe' the real painfull bits have not happend other than these times, then the headache does not go!! still there now, like a normal headache! it was odd as when i changed to levamir from lantus the headache just drifted away secounds after taking the dose, no headaches prior to missing a dose of lantus, now as soon as i missed a dose of my new levamir bang back again!

i am questioning if to go back to animal or not, but gp is not brill, clinic consultant not until june, might just request from gp.

any suggestions as animal long acting?

thanks

HI Ewan,
that's an odd situation regarding the headache. As I said it may or may not be insulin related, so It's best you tell your GP anyway.
Re-the animal insulin long-acting, I take the Porcine Isophane in a split dose and it works for me. It has a similar profile to Insulatard which you're probably familiiar with, i used to split my dose of that, to the annoyance of my DSN, but it works better that way. There are other animal intermediate/long acting insulins still available in both porcine and boviine varieties, contact Wockhardt for more info.
I hope you resolve the problem soon, best of luck
Jus :)
