Hay fever And T2

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with T2 around 2 months ago. Since then I’ve been getting my head around stuff dipping in and out on here.

I’m just wondering if anyone notices their BG increasing with hay fever. The last 2 days my BG has been higher than usual. (6.2 on waking where I’ve been averaging 5.8 and 5.4 Ish pre meal and 7.5 - 8.0 2 hours after a meal) there have been exceptions but mainly when I have been experimenting with what certain foods will do, or that favourite of mine - the hidden ingredient that lays in wait.

I’m on 1000mg of metformin a day and following low carbs. Over the last few days my hay fever has been pretty bad (My whole household suffers with it and we’ve all been bad). Last night my eye swelled almost to the point of closing , and I took a citrazine hydrochloride over the counter pill. As expected it knocked me out. However today my BG spiked to 13.2 2 hours after my lunch (it was 6.2 before) . I am wondering if the antihistamine could be a contributing factor and to expect it moving forwards? A quick google search wasn’t particularly helpful.

The long and short of it is that anything that stresses you or makes you ill etc can raise your bg..

But also so can some medication... Did you tell the pharmacy you are diabetic?? Mine won't give me antihistamines nor will my gp

No as my GP surgery no longer prescribes antihistamines you can buy over the counter. I don’t need the industrial strength ones. Just picked up the generic ones of the supermarket shelf like
I have for years.

If I tell the pharmacy I'm diabetic they won't give me antihistamines they say see gp.. Gp won't give antihistamines as I'm diabetic and prescribes an eye drop... So just because you can get something over the counter you should still seek advice on it

I’m due my first appt with the diabetic nurse in a couple of weeks I’ll mention it then. I’m supposed have them
when my eczema flairs up too. Thanks for the heads
up. I’ve not had the best support since my diagnosis, it was a case of you’ve got T2 here’s your metformin. Google it. We don’t know how long your diabetic nurse/education course/eye test will be because of Covid.

they will probably say carry on as it the lesser of 2 evils as often the other common treatment for eczema is steroid based and steroids are know to raise BG

im not saying you shouldn't take them, but your original question was can hay fever raise BG.. yes it can, but potentially so can your treatment... the only reason i can think that the pharmacy won't give them to me is that they *can* interfere with BG's

in reality every medication you buy over the counter, you should get from a pharmacy and ask them if its ok as a diabetic..

now, having said that... knowing that my pharmacy won't sell me stuff, i sometimes goto a supermarket and but med's there.. but obviously im accepting the risk when i do so... but one of the reason to ask a pharmacist is to something you may commonly buy there are glucose free options/alternative

as for GP's not prescribing antihistamine they will, but the prescription cost is more than buying over the counter.... but of course having a longterm chronic condition you can apply for prescription exemption.. and the GP will prescribe them

This is the first I've heard about antihistamines and diabetes issues. I take a daily one from off the shelf (supermarket) so now wondering what the issue is

Don't know. And as I say my gp only recommends a eyedrop

I too take antihistamine tablets from the supermarket shelf and experience no problem.
In fact, they were recommended to manage occasional skin irritation from my insulin pump.

Have been taking antihistamines for years, and never been told by hospital, gp or pharmacy that there is a problem. When pollen levels are lower, and I don't take them, haven't found any obvious change in bloods.
